Lupita Nyong’o will play both Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey. This confirms long-standing rumors about her involvement in the movie, and reveals she’ll be taking on a dual role. The information came from a recent interview with Nolan in Time magazine.

Details about Lupita Nyong’o’s character in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey are still secret, but Time magazine reports Nolan has added a twist to the story’s ending involving Helen. In Greek mythology, Helen is known as the most beautiful woman, but she’s also famously blamed for initiating the Trojan War because she married Paris of Troy.

The Odyssey is an action-packed retelling of Homer’s classic Greek poem, centering on King Odysseus and his dangerous ten-year voyage back home after the Trojan War. It’s the next film from director Christopher Nolan, following his 2023 award-winning movie, Oppenheimer.

In an interview with Time, Nolan shared that the success of Oppenheimer allowed him to create something unique: a massive Hollywood studio film focused on a complex, character-driven story in a way he hadn’t seen before.

Matt Damon will play Odysseus in the upcoming film, The Odyssey, and fully committed to the role. He underwent rigorous training, followed a strict diet – cutting out gluten and losing weight to reach 167 pounds – and grew a beard for a year. Director Christopher Nolan preferred a natural beard over fake ones for the film.

Christopher Nolan Has Assembled Another Stacked Cast for The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s films are known for increasingly large casts, and his latest, Oppenheimer, includes over 50 actors with speaking parts. Many actors’ roles in his upcoming film, The Odyssey, are still a secret, including Elliot Page, Jesse Garcia, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. Tarabay, Josh Stewart, Ryan Hurst, Jovan Adepo, and Logan Marshall-Green.

Tom Holland, who said in 2024 that landing the role was a dream come true, will portray Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. Anne Hathaway will play Penelope, Telemachus’s mother and Odysseus’s wife.

The film features a strong cast, including Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Samantha Morton as Circe, Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, Mia Goth as Melantho, and Bill Irwin as Polyphemus, as well as many other talented actors.

Even with a large number of characters, director Christopher Nolan recently mentioned his film, which runs for three hours. He explained in April 2026, “It’s a large-scale movie, fitting for the story it tells, but it’s also surprisingly concise.”
