The Office Star Reveals the Racy Joke NBC Cut: ‘I Got Really Mad’

As a fan of the American ‘The Office,’ I always appreciated how far they could push things for a network TV show. But apparently, a lot of content didn’t make it to air. I recently learned that Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin, was particularly bummed about one scene that ended up being cut – it sounds like it was a real gem that never got its moment to shine.

As a huge fan of The Office, I always loved Paul Lieberstein as Kevin. He recently shared a story with Entertainment Weekly about how much of the show was actually improvised, with bits and jokes coming directly from the actors. Apparently, there was this one hilarious line Kevin delivered that didn’t make the original cut, and Paul was bummed about it. But get this – it’s now been added back into the episodes on Peacock, and he feels totally vindicated! It’s great to see those little moments that fans loved finally make it into the show, even years later.

An “Amazing Joke” Didn’t Make the Cut at NBC

Baumgartner explained that while some of his ideas made it into the final product, others were cut. He recalled being frustrated with the editors once when they removed a joke he considered exceptionally funny. Fortunately, the joke was later reinstated, and most people have now seen it.

This joke appeared in the Season 5 episode of The Office, titled “Baby Shower,” which first aired on NBC in 2008. The episode centers around the Dunder Mifflin team getting ready for Jan (Melora Hardin) to have her baby, conceived through a sperm donor. When Jan revealed the donor was from a high-end clinic, Kevin jokingly suggested he might be the donor, leading Jan to wonder if he could be the father of her baby, Astrid.

According to Baumgartner, Kevin starts questioning her about the sperm donor used for their child. She vaguely responds that it was a “very exclusive place,” to which Kevin jokingly replies, “The place behind the IHOP?”

NBC Worried Fans Would Have Too Many Questions

When the episode first aired on NBC, the network apologized to me. I was confused, so they explained their concern: they didn’t want viewers to assume the scene would lead to a storyline involving Kevin’s baby or create confusion. I told them they were worrying too much; it was just a funny moment that didn’t need to be part of a larger plot.

He admitted he was very upset about the situation and initially lost the debate, but the issue has since been resolved. He finds it amusing that the moment is still visible when watching the episode, and feels a sense of satisfaction knowing his point was ultimately proven right.

The popular series has expanded with a new spin-off called The Paper, and more episodes are planned after a successful first season on Peacock. Despite the new show, fans are still enjoying The Office and watching it repeatedly.

You can watch The Office on Peacock, and now it includes extended episodes for devoted fans! These ‘superfan’ versions feature jokes and scenes that were originally cut from the NBC broadcasts.
