The anime One-Punch Man has recently been receiving negative attention due to criticism of its third season, which many fans feel doesn’t measure up to the quality of the first season or the original manga. However, there’s some good news for fans of the series: Sony Pictures is working on a live-action One-Punch Man movie, offering a potentially exciting way to bring the story of Saitama, the “Hero For Fun,” to life.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Justin Lin, the director behind the Fast & Furious films, will be directing a live-action movie based on the video game Helldivers. However, the publication also confirmed that Lin is still working on the live-action adaptation of One-Punch Man. While no new information was revealed about the story or release date of the One-Punch Man film, it’s good to know Sony remains committed to the popular series by ONE. Hopefully, the anime version can improve its fortunes before the movie comes out.
One-Punch Man’s Turbulent Third Season

The anime One-Punch Man originally debuted with Studio Madhouse, known for popular series like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Trigun, and Hellsing. Later seasons two and three were animated by J.C. Staff. While season two had a somewhat mixed response, the third season has been widely considered a major disappointment in 2025. The negative reaction was so strong that Shinpei Nagai, the season’s director, even deleted his social media accounts due to the criticism.
Nagai announced they were deleting their account due to a few dishonest followers. These individuals were intentionally trying to stir up drama, misrepresenting Nagai’s words, attempting to get them to reveal confidential information, and even profiting from it. Despite Nagai’s genuine efforts to support their fans, they felt the situation had become impossible to continue with the current project.
Lin isn’t the only talent working on the live-action One-Punch Man adaptation. Dan Harmon, the creator of Community and Rick and Morty, is co-writing the script, which means fans can expect the same blend of humor and incredible action that the series is known for.
