The Original Show Behind Power Rangers Officially Ends After 50 Years

After 50 years, the Japanese show Super Sentai – the series that became Power Rangers – has ended with its final episode. While Power Rangers has been off the air in the West for a few years, Super Sentai enjoyed a much longer run in Japan, starting with Himitsu Sentai Goranger in 1975. Over the decades, 49 different seasons were created, but now the original show has concluded.

Rumors started last year that Toei might cancel the Super Sentai series after its latest season, No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger, and now it’s confirmed. The final episode aired in Japan this weekend, bringing the 50-year run of the show to a close. While fans hope it might return in the future, Toei is marking the end of the franchise with a special commemorative poster, which you can view below.

Super Sentai Airs Final Episode After 50 Years

Gozyuger, also known as No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger, debuted as a special celebration of the franchise’s 50th anniversary. The team had the unique ability to use the powers of past Sentai heroes. The series finale marked the end of this particular generation and celebrated 50 years of the franchise’s history. While it isn’t a complete cancellation, the series is currently ending, and a return is possible, though likely not for a long time.

When asked if a new Super Sentai series might be made in the future, the President of TV Asahi said it was a possibility, but cautioned that there are currently no firm plans. This suggests fans shouldn’t expect a new installment anytime soon, as Toei is focusing on other projects.

What’s Next After Super Sentai Cancellation?

While the Power Rangers series is starting a new chapter with Disney+ and moving away from its traditional source material, Super Sentai, Toei is launching a fresh Tokusatsu series in Japan. Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity will debut next week, taking over the Sunday timeslot and introducing the Gavan franchise to a new generation of fans.

Ratings for Super Sentai have been declining, similar to what Power Rangers has experienced outside of Japan. Despite Toei trying many different approaches to revitalize the show, they’ve decided to pause it, hoping a fresh start will bring better results. If their new Gavan series doesn’t succeed, Super Sentai won’t necessarily return right away. Instead, we can expect Toei to try out a variety of other new ideas.
