Following the announcement that The Outer Worlds 2 will lower its launch price from $79.99 to $69.99, Microsoft has acknowledged that the game’s initial price was overly high. As reported by Jez Corden of Windows Central, an Xbox spokesperson stated this adjustment aims to align the game’s cost with “present-day market trends”.
Our goal is to offer players amazing realms to discover, and we plan to maintain our regular-priced game launches during holidays, such as The Outer Worlds 2 for $69.99, aligning with today’s market trends,” the representative explained.
In addition, Microsoft has made clear that the price adjustment will affect countries beyond the U.S., such as the UK and EU. For those who haven’t noticed the price change just yet, the company advises that it could take up to a day or two for the updated prices to be reflected.
When Microsoft announced a price reduction from $79.99 to $69.99 for the title, they additionally confirmed that refunds would be given to those who had previously pre-ordered at the higher price. On the other hand, the Premium Edition will not be discounted and will continue to cost $99.99. Alongside various in-game items, the Premium Edition also provides early access for five days and two post-launch expansions after the game’s release.
Initially, Microsoft declared that the upcoming game “The Outer Worlds 2” would retail at $79.99. This price placement was aimed at matching Nintendo’s Mario Kart World, making it the first Xbox-published game to do so. The move appears to be a strategic response to Nintendo’s pricing tactics, testing whether this higher cost might become profitable for Microsoft in the future.
The director of The Outer Worlds 2, Brandon Adler, discussed the game’s price back in June, clarifying that the team mainly handles the production, whereas the publisher makes the final decisions regarding pricing.
Adler, speaking as a game creator, shared that they take great joy in designing games, but they don’t determine their prices. As a developer, Adler wishes everyone could enjoy his creations; however, the $79.99 price point is something best discussed with the Xbox team.
The sequel to ‘The Outer Worlds’, titled ‘The Outer Worlds 2’, is set to arrive on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on October 29th. This release date, along with the news that the game will also be available on PS5, was disclosed in a trailer that dropped in early June. The trailer offered glimpses into the storyline of the upcoming title, where players assume the role of an Earth Directorate agent tasked with probing universe-wide perils on Arcadia.
Previously, Adler mentioned that the studio has received critiques regarding the writing in the original The Outer Worlds, and they aim to make the sequel more serious compared to its predecessor.
