The Perfect Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Was Quietly Set Up 19 Years Ago

Almost two decades ago, a fantastic idea for a *Pirates of the Caribbean* prequel was hinted at, and fans are still hoping it will be made. The original *Pirates of the Caribbean* trilogy, starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, was a major hit in the 2000s, known for its fun adventures. Beyond the comedy and exciting action, the films also had a surprising amount of emotional depth, especially *Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest* released in 2006.

Bill Nighy joined the *Pirates of the Caribbean* films in *Dead Man’s Chest* as Davy Jones, a nearly immortal figure who guides souls to the afterlife and commands the famous ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman. Nighy’s performance helped the movie earn over a billion dollars and allowed audiences to learn a little about Davy Jones’ sad history. While we only saw a brief look at his past relationship with the sea goddess Calypso, fans are eager to see more of their story.

Davy Jones & Calypso’s Backstory Deserves to Be Explored in More Detail

The movies *Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest* and *At World’s End* showed that Davy Jones and Calypso were once in love. Calypso asked Jones, when he was a young sailor, to gather the souls of the dead from the sea and guide them to the afterlife. As part of this duty, Jones was only allowed on land every ten years, and he intended to meet Calypso then. However, she didn’t show up. Feeling guilty, Jones later assisted the Pirate Brethren in trapping Calypso in a human body and ripped out his own heart.

The *Pirates of the Caribbean* movies only touched on the complex history between Davy Jones and Calypso, but their story is big enough to deserve its own film. A prequel focusing on their past would be a fantastic way to bring the franchise back after a long break, and it could open up opportunities for new stories and characters beyond Jack Sparrow, expanding the *Pirates of the Caribbean* universe in exciting ways.

Another *Pirates of the Caribbean* movie is being made, and it will likely include familiar faces alongside some new cast members. While Bill Nighy might return as Davy Jones after an 18-year absence, it doesn’t seem very probable. Several spin-off films are also in the works, featuring stars like Margot Robbie and Ayo Edebiri. This opens the possibility of exploring the backstory of Davy Jones and Calypso in a prequel, which could be a sweet and romantic addition to the *Pirates of the Caribbean* saga.
