Unlike many shows that leave you hanging, The Pitt doesn’t end its seasons with cliffhangers. Similar to the show 24, each season of this medical drama unfolds over a single, intense 15-hour shift in a Pittsburgh emergency room, with each episode representing one hour in real time. Although that might sound slow-paced, The Pitt is surprisingly gripping. Instead of focusing on the doctors’ personal lives – a common trait of medical dramas – the show centers on the patients and the challenges faced by the medical staff. This makes The Pitt one of the best new shows of 2025. As the series returns for a second season on January 8, 2026, with a jump forward in time, it’s a good idea to remember the important events from Season 1.

Dr. Robby Robinavitch, played by Noah Wyle, heads up the day shift at the hospital in The Pitt, a critically acclaimed TV show from 2025, alongside a team of doctors and nurses. A major change happened during the first season with the departure of senior resident Heather Collins (Tracy Ifeachor). After the episode “Quyen Tran,” she disappeared from the show. She had confided in Robby about a past pregnancy and abortion that he was unaware of, and was also dealing with the recent loss of another pregnancy. Robby encouraged her to take time off to cope. Shortly after, the team responded to a mass shooting at a concert. They tried contacting Dr. Collins, but she had followed Robby’s advice and turned off her phone. She didn’t reappear for the rest of the season, and it was later confirmed she wouldn’t be returning to the show. It’s currently unknown how her departure will be explained in future episodes.
Dr. Frank Langdon, a senior resident and Robby’s trusted colleague, is facing serious trouble. First-year resident Dr. Trinity Santos discovered he was stealing drugs from the hospital and exposed him. Initially, it seemed like Trinity was motivated by personal frustration with Dr. Langdon’s harsh criticism, but viewers may have misjudged her intentions. When Robby investigates Trinity’s claims and finds drugs in Frank’s locker, he’s devastated and her suspicions prove correct. Robby sends Dr. Langdon home and orders a full audit to uncover the full scope of the problem.
Despite the turmoil following the shooting, Dr. Langdon offers help, but Robby refuses to overlook his actions. While Robby acknowledges Dr. Langdon’s talent and potential, he can’t simply forgive what happened. However, Robby agrees to let Frank attend a 30-day rehab program, followed by years of required drug tests and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, as a condition of keeping his job. Dr. Langdon’s return to work, after a time jump in Season 2, forces him to juggle the demands of his stressful career with maintaining his sobriety and regaining Robby’s trust. This creates a new and challenging storyline for the usually self-assured doctor. Frank doesn’t need to demonstrate his medical skills; he needs to prove he’s trustworthy.
Other Characters Have Challenges

Several staff members still have unresolved issues. After a particularly difficult day – including being assaulted by a frustrated patient – Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) considered leaving her job. As the experienced charge nurse who holds the team together, she’s incredibly valuable. However, the Season 2 trailer suggests she’ll return, and her journey – including why she almost quit and what she realized while considering retirement – promises to be compelling.
The hospital staff are all facing personal challenges alongside their demanding jobs. Dr. Cassie McKay risked arrest by removing her ankle monitor to focus on her patients. Dr. Samira Mohan was pushing herself to the point of exhaustion, striving for both quality and efficiency in her work. Medical student Dennis Whitaker was found living secretly in the hospital and invited to stay by Trinity, potentially starting a new friendship. And Dr. Mel is juggling the stress of her career with the responsibility of caring for her sister, who is autistic.
The Poetic End of a Tough Work Day

Watching the finale, I was just heartbroken for Robby. He’s always been such a genuinely good person on the show, and by the end, he seemed completely drained. It wasn’t just the constant pressure of making life-or-death decisions all day – the ones that worked and the ones that didn’t – but also the incredibly tough cases he handled. I remember one mother who refused vital treatment for her son, relying on internet searches instead of medical advice, which was just awful. And then helping those siblings navigate the agonizing decision to let their father go, while he was clearly suffering. Throughout it all, you could still see he was deeply affected by losing his friend during the pandemic, a grief he hadn’t fully processed. But what really got to me was Leah’s death. Seeing Jake, whose mother Robby used to date, lash out at him with so much pain and anger… it was devastating. Robby cared so much for Jake, and he clearly felt responsible, even though he couldn’t have saved her. It just felt like everything fell apart for him in that final episode.

It felt fitting that Robby ended his shift right back where he began – on the roof. There, he was found by Dr. Jack Abbot, whom we first met at the same location. Dr. Abbot, who had come to help with the wave of patients from the concert, offered Robby some support, mirroring the encouragement Robby had given him earlier. Together, they went downstairs and joined the other residents in the park, relaxing with beers – a familiar routine for them, offering a brief moment of peace before the cycle begins again.
