Before streaming became popular, TV shows used to premiere on networks like broadcast or cable and come back each year if they were successful. HBO’s programming still works this way.
The popular medical drama launched in January 2025 and quickly became a major cultural hit. After winning numerous awards, it returned for a second season in January 2026 and is already a success. In a recent interview with Deadline, HBO’s Casey Bloys shared positive news about when viewers can expect Season 3.
HBO’s medical drama has been incredibly popular with viewers. While the show’s current season has 15 episodes – longer than many streaming series these days – HBO isn’t planning to make this length the standard for all its shows. Good news for fans, though: the show will be back with more new episodes in 2027.
Regarding Season 3, Bloys expressed complete confidence in the team’s ability to continue the show. He also mentioned that writers are just starting to brainstorm ideas for future seasons.
He explained that he was confident in the creative team, based on the success of the first two seasons. He felt he didn’t need details about the plot to trust their vision and know they’d deliver something good.
While HBO’s Casey Bloys didn’t confirm a specific date, he said the plan is to release Season 3 of The Pitt in January 2027. He emphasized that bringing the show back every year was a key goal from the beginning, and they’re aiming to maintain that schedule.
Despite the upcoming return of both The Pitt and the new Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of Seven Kingdoms – which is planned as an annual series with a lower budget – HBO isn’t intending to apply this model to all of its shows, according to Bloys.
The chairman discussed The Pitt, explaining that medical dramas are consistently popular because the setting – largely confined to one location – naturally creates compelling stories. He noted that the format allows for a constant stream of urgent cases, with new patients in life-or-death situations arriving several times per episode.
The Pitt Has Been a Constant Streaming Hit
Despite a relatively short break between seasons, viewers eagerly tuned in to watch the new episodes as soon as they were released. The series performed well globally on HBO Max, including becoming a surprise success for Heated Rivalry.
A medical drama series is now the most-watched show in the U.S., taking the top spot from the previously leading series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, after nearly a week.
The show stars Noah Wyle and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. The first season earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 95%, and the second season even improved to an impressive 99%. Viewers generally enjoy the series, giving it an 85% approval rating.
The Pitt releases new episodes every Thursday until its Apr. 16 Season 2 finale.
