The Pitt season 3: Release date speculation and latest news

Season 2 of The Pitt is now complete in the US, though it’s just become available in the UK. Another phase of the show has wrapped up.

The HBO medical drama has quickly become a hit in the UK. After all the positive reviews and awards, viewers have been watching the first season rapidly, often binge-watching it all at once.

Now that season two has finished airing in the US, viewers are wondering if the show will be renewed for another season, or if this is the end for the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre.

Read on for everything you need to know about The Pitt season 3.

Will there be The Pitt season 3?

Great news! “The Pitt” has been officially renewed for a third season, with the announcement made in January 2026 – even before the second season premiered.

Noah Wyle, star of ‘The Librarians,’ recently told TopMob that as the show progresses, the writers focus on realistically evolving the characters. They ask themselves where the characters would be after several months and then develop their histories, letting those backstories naturally drive the plot forward.

He explained that their actions reveal their desires and often lead to conflict, and they strive to remain true to those motivations.

When will The Pitt season 3 be released?

The team behind The Pitt is aiming for a new season to come out each year. Seasons one and two began releasing episodes in January 2025 and 2026, respectively.

I’m really excited for season 3, and everything points to it starting to come out in January 2027! Though, just to be clear, that date hasn’t been officially announced yet.

It’s a little uncertain when season 3 will be available in the UK. The first season took more than a year to reach viewers here, and the second season didn’t begin airing until March, a couple of months after its initial release.

The delay in launching HBO Max in the UK caused a difference in when new seasons of shows became available compared to the US. Now that HBO Max is available in the UK, we expect future seasons, like season 3, to premiere at the same time as they do in the US, starting in January.

We’ll share a confirmed release date for The Pitt season 3 as soon as we have it.

What will The Pitt season 3 be about?

We don’t know much about season 3 of The Pitt yet, but it will likely be structured like the first two seasons: following a single 15-hour shift in the emergency room as it happens.

Noah Wyle has hinted that the time jump between seasons 2 and 3 will be smaller than the 10-month jump between seasons 1 and 2.

We’re only interested in seeing how things change with the seasons. Specifically, we want to understand how a shift in weather – like from summer to winter with its cold temperatures, snow, and ice – affects the types of cases we see.

A winter shift it is then.

Who will return to star in The Pitt season 3?

Noah Wyle is returning to “The Pitt,” reprising his role as Dr. Robby for another season. Most of the main cast from season one, including Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, and Gerran Howell, are also expected to return.

We don’t have much information about the cast for season 3 yet, but we know Supriya Ganesh, who plays Dr. Samira Mohan, will be leaving the show after season 2. This decision is said to be based on the storyline and will likely become clear as season 2 progresses.

Speaking with Variety, showrunner Wyle explained that cast departures are expected with a show like theirs. It’s difficult to maintain the same group of actors over time while still making the show feel realistic, as hospital emergency rooms naturally see a lot of staff turnover.

We’re always looking to introduce new characters or give existing ones more prominent roles when cast members leave, to keep the stories interesting. But Supriya has been a vital part of the show from the start. Dr. Mohan is a much-loved character, and I’ve really enjoyed working with Supriya – we’re sad to see her go and wish her the best in whatever she does next.

R Scott Gemmill, the creator of The Pitt, explained that the show aims for realism. He noted that, like in the medical field, characters naturally progress and move on, so the cast will be changing. He sees this as a good opportunity for the actors and believes it’s the most authentic approach they can take.

Ayesha Harris, who played Dr. Parker Ellis in a few episodes of seasons one and two, will be a main cast member starting in season three.

Here’s who we expect to see in The Pitt, season 3, in addition to the new patients and supporting actors you’ll meet.

  • Noah Wyle as Dr Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch
  • Patrick Ball as Dr Frank Langdon
  • Katherine LaNasa as Dana Evans
  • Fiona Dourif as Dr Cassie McKay
  • Taylor Dearden as Dr Melissa ‘Mel’ King
  • Isa Briones as Dr Trinity Santos
  • Gerran Howell as Dr Dennis Whitaker
  • Shabana Azeez as Victoria Javadi
  • Sepideh Moafi as Dr Baran Al-Hashimi
  • Shawn Hatosy as Dr Jack Abbot
  • Ayesha Harris as Dr Parker Ellis
