Each season of The Pitt unfolds over a single 15-hour shift, where the stories in each episode flow seamlessly into one another. However, the season is still built around the individual experiences of the patients who come to the hospital.
The show begins with the story of Joseph Spencer, an elderly man battling pneumonia, sepsis, and Alzheimer’s. His adult children face a difficult decision: should they place him on a ventilator, or honor his wish not to receive life support?
Noah Wyle, the lead actor, says this is his favorite storyline of the series so far. He shared his thoughts with TopMob, along with his co-star Katherine LaNasa.
When asked about a favorite storyline, Wyle highlighted a Season 1 arc where adult children said goodbye to their father, a story his character was deeply involved in. He particularly appreciated how the show took the time to realistically portray the family’s struggles and their search for peace during a difficult time.
Wyle explained that his character shares a piece of advice, learned from his own mentor, rooted in the Hawaiian practice of Ho’oponopono. This ritual suggests using four phrases – “thank you,” “I love you,” “I forgive you,” and “please forgive me” – to help with grieving. He noted that when his character shares this, it has a powerful impact.
I really enjoyed that story, and many people have written to me saying they’ve successfully used the lessons from it to improve their own lives.
The first season of the show stars Wyle and LaNasa, along with Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, and Shabana Azeez.
