The Rarest Pokémon Card in History Just Sold for Another Record-Breaking Amount (& Logan Paul Sold It)

A Pokémon card has become the most expensive ever sold, increasing in value threefold in just five years. While Pokémon encourages fans to ‘Gotta Catch ‘Em All,’ completing a full collection is incredibly difficult and expensive. The biggest challenge for collectors is the ‘Pikachu Illustrator’ card. This rare card was printed only 39 times in 1998 as part of an illustration contest in the Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic, and was never sold in stores, making it exceptionally hard to obtain.

Logan Paul, the popular YouTuber who also boxes, recently sold an incredibly rare Pokémon card for a huge sum. He originally purchased the card himself five years ago for a record price. What made this Pikachu Illustrator card so valuable? It was the only one ever given a perfect grade of 10/10 by PSA, meaning it was in flawless condition. No other Pokémon card is rarer, more difficult to obtain, or in better shape than this collectible.

What Makes Paul’s Pikachu Card So Valuable

In 2021, Paul bought a Pikachu Illustrator card for $5.2 million, which was a record-breaking price for a Pokémon card, as recognized by Guinness World Records. This year, he sold the highly sought-after card—often called the “holy grail” for collectors—for $16.49 million. The sale was handled by Goldin Auctions, who announced the new Guinness World Record in a press release.

Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator Pokémon card has tripled in value in just five years, and several factors contributed to this increase. The ongoing popularity of Pokémon collectibles played a role, but Paul’s unique handling of the card really amplified its fame—and price. He famously spent $75,000 to create an extravagant diamond and gold case for the card, and even wore it as a necklace during his entrance at Wrestlemania in 2022. This rare card, already highly sought-after for its condition, gained even more attention thanks to this unusual display, further boosting its value.

Who Purchased Logan Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator Card

The $16 million winning bid for the rare baseball card came from A.J. Scaramucci. His father, Anthony Scaramucci, might ring a bell – he briefly served as White House Communications Director under Donald Trump. Anthony’s time in the role was famously short, lasting only 10 days – the second-shortest in history. Only John O. Koehler, who served for about a week under Ronald Reagan, had a shorter stint.

Although Anthony Scaramucci Jr. probably won’t make the Pikachu Illustrator card as famous as Logan Paul did, it’s safe to say this incredibly rare card will likely break price records again in the future.
