Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, has been ruthless in Daredevil: Born Again, but he’s about to become even more dangerous, giving fans a truly frightening look at the character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout the first two seasons, he’s committed terrible acts, like the murder of Commissioner Gallo in front of his colleagues as a demonstration of power. In the fourth episode of Season 4, “Gloves Off,” he nearly lost control, but his wife, Vanessa, intervened and calmed him down. However, recent events have likely destroyed any chance of him regaining that composure.
In the episode “Gloves Off,” Bullseye attempted to assassinate Wilson Fisk, but his attack was deflected and tragically hit Vanessa Fisk, seriously wounding her. The final moments of “The Grand Design” suggest Vanessa has died, a loss that will likely have major consequences for New York City.
Vanessa Fisk’s Death Will Bring Out the Worst In the Kingpin

The show previously revealed Wilson Fisk’s greatest vulnerability: his lack of an heir to leave his criminal empire to. Now, with no wife or family to share his power with, he’s likely to become even more ruthless and unstable. Even the governor confided in Vanessa that she didn’t trust Fisk, but believed Vanessa could manage him. Her death removes that control, making things dangerous for Fisk himself, and even more so for everyone in New York City – heroes and ordinary citizens alike.
In the comics, Kingpin and his wife were separated when she passed away, but he still loved her. Her death deeply affected him, and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series suggests things will get even worse. Kingpin has a history of doing awful things, but without his wife’s influence, he’s likely to become even more dangerous. It’s worth remembering that Vanessa wasn’t innocent either – she secretly hired Bullseye to try and kill Foggy Nelson, a fact even Kingpin didn’t initially know. While Vanessa was a threat, Kingpin is far more destructive when he has no one to keep him in check.
While Cashman might manage to contain Fisk to some degree, nothing can prevent the chaos that will erupt after Vanessa’s death. Fisk will likely blame the vigilantes for his wife’s death and will be especially furious with Daredevil for letting Bullseye get away. He may order the immediate killing of all vigilantes instead of arresting them. Given the task force’s recent actions against innocent civilians, this could ultimately lead to the downfall of Fisk’s power over New York City.
Vanessa’s Death Might Also Be the Start of Wilson Fisk’s Downfall
“Gloves Off” depicted the aftermath of Vanessa Fisk’s death in several key scenes. One moment showed Wilson Fisk being unexpectedly struck during a boxing match, after which he violently attacked his opponent, immediately silencing the previously enthusiastic crowd.
He nearly killed his opponent, which would have destroyed everything he’d worked for, but Vanessa intervened and stopped him. Earlier, Vanessa had met with the New York governor, who refused to support Fisk’s actions as mayor. However, the governor did offer support to both Wilson and Vanessa Fisk, and their shared goals. Without Vanessa, Fisk may have lost his only leverage.
The third significant item was a crystal sculpture of New York City, designed as merchandise for the boxing match and featuring Kingpin’s face overlooking the city. This was the object Bullseye attempted to use to kill Kingpin, but Kingpin deflected it with his championship belt, shattering the sculpture. A shard of the crystal then tragically pierced Vanessa’s neck, causing her death. This moment powerfully illustrates that Kingpin’s own choices ultimately led to his wife’s demise, even more so than Bullseye’s actions. It also foreshadows Kingpin’s eventual ruin, though not before he causes further violence and suffering.
