The Return of Dr. Kelso & 4 More Missing Scrubs Characters in Season 2 Gets a Very Positive Update

The recent return of Scrubs has been a hit, and fans are already wondering what’s next. Creator Bill Lawrence and star Zach Braff have hinted that the show could last for several more seasons (possibly up to five!), giving them plenty of time to develop new stories and bring back familiar faces and plotlines from the original series.

The new Scrubs revival did a great job bringing back many of the show’s beloved characters. Along with the main cast – including J.D. Dorian, Elliot Reid, Chris Turk, Carla Espinosa, and Perry Cox – fans also enjoyed seeing familiar faces in recurring and cameo roles, such as The Janitor, Todd Quinlan, Crazy Hooch, and Jordan, Dr. Cox’s ex-wife, among others.

Scrubs Revival Season 2 Will Bring Back One Major Character

A new interview with Bill Lawrence is now available, following the season finale of Scrubs. He hints at more returning characters we might see in Season 2, and specifically mentions one possibility.

Lawrence confirmed to Deadline that Dr. Kelso will return next year, explaining that plans didn’t align this year, but are expected to work out in the future.

Ken Jenkins was a beloved part of the show Scrubs, playing the quirky and often outrageous Dr. Bob Kelso throughout all eight original seasons and even the short-lived ninth season. As Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital, Kelso provided much of the show’s comedy, acting as a somewhat eccentric and unpredictable figure. His character often represented the business side of healthcare, sometimes prioritizing profits over patient care. After retiring and the death of his wife, Enid, he returned to teach medical students. While initially stated that scheduling conflicts prevented his return for the reboot, Jenkins ultimately appeared in the second season.

Who Else Is Returning to Scrubs?

Aseem Batra, who is leading the new Scrubs revival, shared that the team is working hard to include as many actors and characters from the original series as they can.

As a huge Scrubs fan, I’m thrilled to hear they’re bringing back some characters we didn’t get to see enough of last season! Honestly, the team was still figuring things out as they went, juggling filming in both Vancouver and LA. With nine episodes – though really eight after the pilot sets everything up – they have room to really dive into things and introduce people we’ve been missing. They’re clearly excited about it, and so am I!

The showrunner mentioned several potential guest stars, including Johnny Kastl, who played the clumsy Dr. Doug Murphy, Scott Foley as marine biologist Sean Kelly—a former love interest of Elliot’s—and Elizabeth Banks as Dr. Kim Brigg, J.D.’s baby’s mother. They’re all being considered for future appearances.

As a huge Scrubs fan, I was so excited to hear that the creators are hoping to bring back some familiar faces! They definitely want to get Johnny Kastl, Scott Foley, and Ken Jenkins involved again, and they’re really keen on having more of Neil Flynn. They even mentioned Elizabeth Banks, but understand she’s incredibly busy with her own successful career, so it might be tricky to get her back. It’s awesome to know they’re thinking about bringing back so many of our favorites!

The divorce of J.D. and Elliot came as a surprise in the first episode of the Scrubs revival. While Season 1 moved the overall story forward, J.D. and Elliot’s relationship remains unfinished. Given that the original Scrubs series ended with Sean and Kim finding happiness together after breaking up with Elliot and J.D., an episode featuring guest appearances by both Foley and Banks feels essential.
