Marvel Studios’ films haven’t resonated quite as strongly with audiences ever since Avengers: Endgame, and there’s a clear reason why. By the time that movie came out, viewers had become deeply invested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, making the story – particularly Tony Stark’s sacrifice – incredibly impactful. Endgame felt like a satisfying conclusion to a major chapter, and everything released afterward has seemed less essential because it lacked that sense of finality; losing the hero who launched the whole MCU truly felt like closing the book on an era.
Marvel is hoping Robert Downey Jr.’s return in a new role will revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has felt a bit stagnant lately. Interestingly, the directors of Avengers: Doomsday recently revealed that Iron Man’s heroic death was almost a reality much earlier than Endgame. In a new interview with CBR, co-director Joe Russo confirmed a long-standing rumor: Marvel seriously considered killing off Iron Man in Avengers: Infinity War instead of waiting until the next film.
Marvel Considered Killing Iron Man in Avengers: Infinity War

It’s common for us to explore every possibility when we’re brainstorming, Russo explained. We believe the best idea should always prevail. Sometimes that means pushing an idea to its limits to see what happens. There was a point where we thought a particular choice would really surprise people and could work well, but we immediately had to consider how that would affect the character’s role in the following film. Ultimately, we decided it was worth saving that idea for the next movie instead.
Russo is correct in his assessment. Killing Tony Stark at the end of Avengers: Infinity War would have been surprisingly unsatisfying for viewers. His story arc wasn’t fully resolved, and his death would have only served to emphasize Thanos’s villainy. Ultimately, that approach likely would have left audiences feeling disappointed with the whole saga.
As Russo pointed out, the strongest concept ultimately prevailed. Avengers: Infinity War effectively used surprising character deaths – like Spider-Man’s – and strategically saved Iron Man’s death for a pivotal moment that perfectly concluded Tony Stark’s journey throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was such a satisfying conclusion that it has been difficult for subsequent films to reach the same emotional impact.
Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. shared that his only suggestion during the making of the Avengers movies was a simple plea: “Please don’t kill off my character.”
