Although fans haven’t gotten a new season of the show itself, they’ve been receiving small updates and hints for a while now. Now, the creators have released a sequel to the novel that continues the story of The Expanse – and you can read the first chapter for free! Even better, there are official plans to adapt this new book series into a television show.
James S.A. Corey (the writing team of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) kicks off their Captive’s War series with The Mercy of Gods. The novel takes place after an alien invasion that humanity couldn’t hope to win. The invaders, a fearsome race called the Carryx, enslave some species while wiping out others – immediately killing one-eighth of the population on the planet Anjiin as a brutal demonstration of their power over humans. You can begin reading the first chapter of The Mercy of Gods here.
It’s a Brutal Story of Hope Amidst Violence and Conquest

In the new novel, The Faith of Beasts, we meet Dafyd Alkhor, a man who holds a position of power over human captives within the Carryx empire. Though feared and hated by those he rules, Alkhor maintains order through force, hoping to transform humanity into a resource for their alien overlords. However, his true allegiance is a secret. Meanwhile, a hidden enemy infiltrates the Carryx’s palace with a mission to destroy the empire, but the longer this enemy, known as the Swarm, spends among humans, the more it loses sight of its original purpose and changes its very nature.
It’s easy to see why this new series, created by the team behind the hit show The Expanse, has already been picked up by Amazon MGM Studios for television. Emmy-nominated showrunner Naren Shankar and director Breck Eisner are leading the project, with the original authors, Abraham and Franck, also involved in bringing their story to life. Shankar explains that the team learned a lot from The Expanse – building a detailed and engaging world with compelling characters and emotional stories, all while being mindful of the budget – and they’re now applying that experience to this new project and platform.
