A recent episode of The Simpsons confirmed that a marriage is still happening, surprising many viewers. As the show enters its 37th season on Fox, fans are noticing significant changes for several characters, including unexpected pairings and shifts in their usual lives. While The Simpsons has altered character storylines before, these changes often don’t last, with new developments eventually fading into the background.
In recent seasons, The Simpsons has quietly made some significant changes, including introducing new characters and even removing others who seemed important. Fortunately, one character hasn’t been affected: Groundskeeper Willie’s wife, Maisie. The latest episode confirms she and Willie are still happily married and living together in their shack at Springfield Elementary.
The Simpsons Confirms Willie’s Still Married

In a recent episode of The Simpsons, Principal Skinner investigates a noise at Springfield Elementary after hours. He discovers Groundskeeper Willie is secretly living happily with his wife, Maisie, in a shack on school grounds. Despite enjoying a game of Scottish Scrabble, Maisie encourages Willie to hunt down whatever creature is making noise, referring to it as a vulnerable animal that has wandered into human territory.
Although she only appears briefly in this episode, it’s a significant moment. Season 37 of The Simpsons has been great at bringing back familiar characters and establishing new ones. We recently saw the return of Moe’s fiancée, Maya, who is happily planning a future with him. This shows the show isn’t simply forgetting characters who have impacted the story, even if their circumstances have changed.
Who Is Maisie?

Maisie MacDougal, originally known as Maisie MacWeldon, was introduced in Season 35 of The Simpsons as a love interest for Groundskeeper Willie. Voiced by Karen Gillan, known for her roles in Avengers and Jumanji, Maisie and Willie fell in love before Willie immigrated to America. However, her parents disapproved and lied to her, telling her Willie had died. This led Willie to believe she’d ended their relationship when he moved to America alone. Years later, they reunited in Scotland and quickly got married.
Her return in the newest episode shows she’s still an important part of Willie’s story, which is good news for the character. While other minor characters have gotten married off in the past – like Comic Book Guy’s Kumiko – it’s often unclear if these relationships will matter going forward, especially when involving guest stars. Fortunately, we now know Willie and his wife are still happily together.
