I’ve been watching The Simpsons for a long time, and after 36 years, they’ve done something pretty significant with Patty and Selma Bouvier. These two sisters, Marge’s sisters, have always been important to the show, but we’ve never really seen what their lives are like at home. We’ve seen episodes focusing on them, and their personalities have evolved over the years, but this change really shakes things up and gives us a new look at their relationship as sisters.
Season 37 of The Simpsons has been full of surprises, and the latest episode is no different. It centers around Patty and Selma, who find themselves disagreeing after Selma gets a promotion. They eventually realize they’re growing apart and decide to live separately, even moving into their own apartments after sharing a home for so long.
The Simpsons Splits Up Patty and Selma With Season 37

In the Simpsons Season 37 episode, “Aunt Misbehavin’,” a rivalry erupts between Patty and Selma when Selma gets a promotion at the DMV and begins to mistreat her sister. The conflict escalates to Selma firing Patty after Patty and Homer attempt a scheme to fake Homer’s death. Patty, upset, moves to Palm Springfield and gets a new hairstyle to create distance from Selma. Selma, in turn, starts dating someone new, hoping to further irritate her sister.
At the end of the episode, the twin sisters make up after a small disagreement. They realize they’ve been so focused on being twins that they’ve lost touch as sisters and individuals. To show they’re committed to improving their relationship, Patty moves out of their shared apartment—but surprisingly, she moves right next door. This change is significant for their characters, but they remain close both physically and emotionally.
What Does This Mean for Patty and Selma’s Future?

The biggest question surrounding this change is whether it will last. The Simpsons is known for making big changes within episodes, but often returns things to normal quickly. While some major shifts, like retiring characters, have stuck over the years, it’s hard to say if this will be permanent for Patty and Selma.
They’ll probably continue living in separate apartments, as that detail isn’t crucial to the story. The bigger question is whether Patty’s new look will last. The twins have had temporary makeovers before, but this change feels more meaningful for Patty, and the show might decide to keep the new style for future episodes. The series has always tried to distinguish the twins, so it will be interesting to see if they permanently alter one of their designs.
