The Simpsons continues to playfully clash with other popular animated shows like Family Guy and American Dad!, and this tradition continued in a recent episode. Now in its 37th season, The Simpsons has a long history of joking about—and sometimes subtly feuding with—these other hits. Over the years, these playful jabs have varied in how obvious and lengthy they’ve been.
Many thought the rivalry was over when The Simpsons and Family Guy did a crossover episode. However, The Simpsons has continued to playfully tease Family Guy in recent years. The latest instance came in a new episode which pointed out a common theme among The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad!, and even older shows like The Flintstones: they all center around clueless, overweight fathers and their much more attractive wives.
The Simpsons Takes New Shot at Family Guy

In a recent episode of The Simpsons’ 37th season, titled “Men Behaving Manly,” Homer and other Springfield men attend a retreat designed to help them reconnect with themselves. The camp’s leader, Greg (voiced by Al Brooks, returning to the show), points out how many TV comedies rely on jokes about dads. He specifically mentions Family Guy and American Dad, and even jokes about a failed FOX pilot called “Daddy’s Not Home.” This prompts Homer to reflect on the trope, quipping, “Stupid fat dads with their way hotter wives.” The episode then includes a self-aware moment as Homer briefly speaks in his original Season 1 voice, declaring, “I like doughnuts and bowling.”
The gag features someone dressed as Fred Flintstone awkwardly walking onto the screen, stepping on the keys of his iconic xylophone with each footstep. It’s a playful nod to the shared origins of these shows, all stemming from the same classic sitcom concept – a joke Family Guy has often used itself. It’s not meant as a criticism of other shows, but rather a way for The Simpsons to acknowledge how far everyone has come since their respective beginnings.
What Does This Mean for The Simpsons and Family Guy’s Long Feud?
Over time, The Simpsons and Family Guy have playfully poked fun at each other, and that back-and-forth seemed to have lessened recently. The latest Simpsons Halloween special included a quick reference to Family Guy‘s Stewie, jokingly comparing it to low-quality TV – a similar type of joke. The way the episode portrays both shows focuses on their shared qualities and common ground.
The artwork used in Family Guy and American Dad also feels like it’s based on older designs from those shows – and the Flintstones imagery at the end makes it clear this isn’t meant as criticism. Similar to The Simpsons, these shows rely heavily on simple, dad-style humor.
