Star Trek, a cherished and enduring franchise, has undoubtedly been a source of continuous effort by producers to keep the momentum going. Over the past few decades, both new cast members and returning veterans have contributed to fresh narratives and thrilling journeys. Although not all shows or productions received the same level of acclaim, it’s clear that they each resonated with their intended audience.
The recent merger with Paramount has stirred excitement and curiosity among fans about what the future holds for Star Trek. With numerous unanswered questions still lingering, we can at least scrutinize the contemporary Star Trek series and the announced upcoming projects to get a better idea of where this iconic franchise is headed.
Currently, Star Trek enthusiasts find themselves in an unusual predicament, as things seem rather up in the air. Previously, several new series were simultaneously launched on various streaming platforms, but over the past two years, these projects have mostly wrapped up, causing concern among fans that the franchise might be closing down once more. However, it’s more probable that Paramount+ is simply reevaluating its Star Trek approach, which isn’t necessarily a negative development.
1) Star Trek: Discovery
Many streaming platforms showcase a flagship program, which is essentially the program they believe will draw in new viewers. In the case of CBS All Access, this was Star Trek: Discovery, and it led to the creation of numerous other Star Trek productions.
Star Trek: Discovery aired from 2017 to 2024, spanning five seasons in total. Initially, the narrative unfolded approximately ten years before the timeline of the original Star Trek series (known as Star Trek: The Original Series or ST:TOS). However, the Season 2 finale catapults it into the 32nd century. Known for its audacious and contentious approach, the show features Michael Burnham as the main character and introduces alterations to the established canon on occasion.
2004 marked the final season for the show, wrapping up at Season 5. This sudden ending caught viewers off guard since it wasn’t originally planned to wrap up then, however, at least it didn’t leave fans hanging with a cliffhanger.
2) Star Trek: Short Treks
The short-form series titled “Star Trek: Short Treks” debuted in 2018, adopting an anthology structure for the franchise. Initially, it served as a complement to “Star Trek: Discovery,” with early episodes exploring various characters from within the same series. As the series progressed, it began hinting at the upcoming “Star Trek: Picard,” laying groundwork for the next installment in the pipeline.
Star Trek: Short Treks ran for two seasons, but unfortunately, further episodes or seasons didn’t proceed due to a pause rather than an official cancellation. The pandemic hindered any potential new episodes or seasons, leading the streaming service to explore other projects instead.
3) Star Trek: Picard
Following that, we had “Star Trek: Picard” air from 2020 to 2023. Remarkably, the show managed to continue its run even during the pandemic period. The narrative unfolds in the 24th century, approximately two decades after “Star Trek: Nemesis”. As you might guess, this series primarily focused on Jean-Luc Picard.
Although officially retired, Picard continues to find himself involved in various situations, even going so far as saving the universe. In other words, his skills and talents remain undiminished. The Star Trek: Picard series spanned three seasons, wrapping up with a satisfying conclusion. Contrary to being cancelled, it was intentionally brought to an end. However, fans are yet to witness the promised spin-off.
4) Star Trek: Lower Decks
Among the various offerings in our lineup, Star Trek: Lower Decks marks the debut as an animated series and also the ninth installment in the Star Trek franchise. It aired from 2020 to 2024, spanning five seasons. Unlike traditional Star Trek series, this one leans more towards comedy, showcasing humor and the absurd.
Unfortunately, Paramount+ concluded “Star Trek: Lower Decks” with its fifth season. Fans have tried various strategies to keep it going, but progress has been minimal so far. It’s unexpected, considering the relatively low production costs associated with this project. However, a comic series is available for viewing instead.
5) Star Trek: Prodigy
Star Trek: Prodigy” is a new animated series in the Star Trek universe, characterized by a more lighthearted tone due to Nickelodeon’s involvement. Although it only ran for two seasons, its production path was quite unusual. The first season premiered on Paramount+, but the platform unexpectedly halted production for Season 2 during its run.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that we successfully wrapped up the second season and it graced our screens, not on Paramount+ as originally anticipated, but on Netflix instead. Regrettably, however, the streaming titan decided against renewing the series for a third season, which means this is the extent of our journey together.
6) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Moving forward, we find ourselves with “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” a series that commenced in 2022 and continues production as of now. This show centers around Captain Christopher Pike and his crew aboard the Enterprise, but takes place approximately a decade before the original series, “Star Trek: TOS.” The show has garnered significant attention and recognition in the media.
Significantly, we can expect two additional seasons of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”. The fourth season is set to debut around 2026, while the final season, consisting of only six episodes, will follow. This decision was made as a compromise, enabling the series to bring its storyline to a close before it was cancelled.
7) Star Trek: Section 31
Although technically categorized as a TV movie, “Star Trek: Section 31” is being included here due to its direct connection with “Star Trek: Discovery“. This film debuted on Paramount+ on January 4, 2025, however, the reception was relatively modest, suggesting that additional installments might not be forthcoming.
The television series titled “Star Trek: Section 31” centers around the character Philippa Georgiou during her involvement with Section 31, a covert division within Starfleet. Given its clandestine nature, the show veered off from the more conventional Star Trek narrative right from the outset. Despite boasting an exceptional ensemble cast, it seems that this production may have taken on too ambitious a venture, possibly leaving viewers with mixed feelings.
8) Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is due to premiere on Paramount+ as part of their future Star Trek production lineup, expected for release in 2026. This upcoming series will take place far in the future (32nd century) and focus on a new group of characters who are cadets at Starfleet Academy, making them the first cadets in over a hundred years, signifying a significant event in the universe.
If you’ve been concerned about becoming invested in a show that might not make it past its first season, here’s some good news. The upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, despite not having premiered yet, has already been given the go-ahead for a second season, with production already underway.
9) Star Trek: Scouts
The new series titled “Star Trek: Scouts” marks a fresh start in the world of Star Trek, aiming to cultivate a new wave of fans. Given its innovative approach by premiering on YouTube rather than traditional television, it’s quite exciting to anticipate its success. Yet, what truly sets this series apart is that it becomes the first ever Star Trek series airing directly on YouTube.
As a passionate Star Trek fan, let me share an exciting piece of news: We’re expanding the Star Trek universe with a preschool spin-off titled “Star Trek: Scouts“. Designed for the little ones, these bite-sized episodes are perfect for their binge-watching sessions. Two episodes have already been released, and we’ve got 18 more in store for Season 1!
10) Potential Future Projects & Beyond
It’s understandable that everyone is anxious about the fate of Star Trek series that were in production hiatus during the merger. Will they end up in a state of uncertainty? Or will they manage to move forward? Thanks to STLV: Trek to Vegas (a large Star Trek convention), we now have insight into four possible new Star Trek series that are being considered. These productions have presented their ideas, so all we can do is remain patient and optimistic.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that it’s me and my fellow space-exploring companions who are the ones pitching this new Star Trek series. We’re calling it Star Trek: Year One, and it delves into Captain James T. Kirk’s maiden voyage as he takes the helm of the USS Enterprise for the very first time, setting the stage for the legendary adventures that lie ahead!
Coming up next is a proposal featuring Michael Sussman (known for his work on Star Trek: Enterprise) and Scott Bakula, who would portray Jonathan Archer. This proposed series follows in the vein of Star Trek: Picard, focusing on Archer as the President of the United Federation of Planets. As of now, this series does not have a decided title.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited about the upcoming project that, unfortunately, doesn’t have a catchy title yet. But
Last on our list, yet by no means least exciting, we have the much-anticipated series among fans: Star Trek: Legacy. Star Trek: Legacy is potentially a spin-off from Star Trek: Picard, and it’s something fans have been eagerly waiting for years. While showrunner Terry Matalas has mentioned that there’s no progress on the series (so far), the creative team remains intrigued. Moreover, Jeri Ryan has hinted at reasons to keep our hopes alive.
Just a heads-up, none of these shows have been confirmed yet, so let’s not get our expectations too high. While it’s likely that one or more might get picked up, the recent merger between Skydance and Paramount is still fresh, making predictions somewhat uncertain. They could always come up with something unexpected!
