The Status of Spider-Man 4 With Tobey Maguire Was Just Confirmed by Sam Raimi

After the original Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire finished, most fans assumed he wouldn’t play the role again. That’s why Spider-Man: No Way Home was such a surprise – it brought Maguire and Andrew Garfield back, alongside Tom Holland, for a story that combined different versions of Spider-Man. The film was a huge hit, largely because of the fun interaction between the three actors. This led many to hope for another movie starring either Maguire or Garfield. While Garfield has said The Amazing Spider-Man 3 isn’t happening, there was some optimism about Spider-Man 4 with Maguire. Unfortunately, it looks like that won’t be happening either.

Director Sam Raimi recently told Screen Rant that he doesn’t plan to make a fourth Spider-Man movie continuing his original series. He explained that it wouldn’t feel right for him to revisit that version of the story, effectively ending hopes for a sequel picking up where his films left off.

Sam Raimi explained that Stan Lee developed Spider-Man with a team of writers and artists at Marvel. After 40 years of comics, Raimi had the opportunity to continue the story, which he did with his three films. He then passed the responsibility on to someone else, hoping they would continue developing the story and engaging the existing fanbase.

Spider-Man 4 Shouldn’t Happen Without Sam Raimi

Even though Tom Holland continues to star in successful Spider-Man movies, with a new film coming out this summer, The Batman Part II writer Mattson Tomlin has been working on a potential Spider-Man 4 featuring Tobey Maguire. He recently shared that the project is still in development and hasn’t been officially rejected. The idea is to explore Peter Parker navigating the difficulties of being a father while also being Spider-Man, which many fans find very appealing.

While it would be wonderful to see Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst reprise their roles as Peter Parker and MJ, a fourth Spider-Man movie shouldn’t happen unless Sam Raimi wants to direct it. His unique style and love for the comics are why his original Spider-Man films are still so beloved. Another director could take on the project, but it wouldn’t feel the same. It’s fine for Maguire to appear in Tom Holland’s movies, but if he’s going to be the central Spider-Man again, Raimi needs to be directing. As he proved with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he can still create a fun, action-packed comic book movie, and he’d likely do the same with Spider-Man 4.

While Sam Raimi is moving on to new projects, there’s still a possibility Tobey Maguire could reprise his role as Spider-Man. Rumors suggest he might appear in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, which are using the multiverse to bring together different eras of Marvel characters. Though it’s not confirmed, it would be surprising if the current saga ended without seeing Maguire’s Spider-Man again. Just as fans said goodbye to the X-Men cast in Doomsday, one of the Avengers movies could offer Maguire a similar farewell. There’s also talk that Sadie Sink might play Mayday Parker, Maguire’s Spider-Man’s daughter, in a future project, which could continue his story.

Even if Tobey Maguire doesn’t return for another Avengers film, his appearance in No Way Home will always be a highlight for fans. It was great to see him reprise the role, and it wasn’t just about nostalgia. No Way Home redeemed the widely disliked Spider-Man 3, which many consider the weakest film in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Fans finally got a satisfying conclusion to Maguire’s story, seeing his Peter Parker find happiness with Mary Jane. After years of being a hero, he finally seemed content and at peace. If that’s the last we see of him as Spider-Man, he ended his run on a truly positive note.
