I was so excited for the final movie of *The Summer I Turned Pretty*, but Jenny Han, the creator, explained that they’re waiting until the actors are a bit older before they start filming. Sadly, that means we won’t be seeing it in 2026, which is a bummer, but I totally understand wanting to let the cast grow into their roles a little more!
Just a day after the third season finale aired on Wednesday, September 17th, Amazon announced plans for a movie to finish the story of the popular young adult series.
Although the story and actors haven’t been revealed yet, Han will be back to co-write the screenplay with Sarah Kucserka.
In a recent Variety interview, Han discussed the upcoming movie and shared her desire to set it some time after the events of the season 3 finale.
Someone asked if we could expect the movie next year, since a first draft of the script is already done. I was a little disappointed to hear her say, “No, I don’t think so.”
She wasn’t sure when the project would be released, and didn’t want to promise it would be next year since filming hadn’t started. She explained that she’d like some extra time to allow the actors to mature a bit more.

We’ll see Belly grow up throughout the film, from age 15 to 16 and beyond, as she becomes a young woman. It’s exciting because Lola, her brother, is now 22! I intentionally wanted the movie to jump ahead in time, and I’m happy we were able to create that space to show their growth.
When asked whether she knows how far ahead in time the movie could jump, Han said: “No.”
The movie adaptation of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ was revealed during a celebratory red carpet event following the show’s finale, which took place in Paris.
Han explained at the event that there’s one major part of Belly’s story still to be told, and he believes a movie is the best way to do it, according to Variety.
She expressed her gratitude to Prime Video for backing her creative vision and allowing her to share the story’s conclusion with fans.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is available to stream on Prime Video.
