Okay, so I just watched the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and I’m seriously hyped! It looks like they’re really leaning into the Super Mario Galaxy vibe, with all these amazing planets and those Launch Stars we all know and love. But the biggest news for me? Rosalina’s going to be a huge part of the story, and Brie Larson is voicing her! That’s a massive get, and it makes me think they’re finally going to explore her backstory and maybe even confirm some of those fan theories we’ve all been debating for years. I’m so ready for this movie!
A popular theory among Nintendo fans proposes that Rosalina and Princess Peach are related. Fans point to their similar appearances – both are blonde-haired, blue-eyed princesses – as initial evidence. However, the strongest support comes from a storybook featured in the game Super Mario Galaxy.
According to the storybook, Rosalina left her planet after her mother passed away, described as peacefully resting beneath a tree. The book also reveals she had a father and a brother. Fans have noticed the depiction of her mother seems dreamlike and shares similarities with Princess Peach, particularly in her hair and earrings. This observation is supported by the official game guide, which states the developers initially planned for Peach and Rosalina to be related, but ultimately decided against it during the game’s creation.
Peach’s Movie Backstory Makes Her Being Rosalina’s Sibling More Likely

The recent Super Mario Bros. Movie significantly changed Princess Peach’s background, making her connection to Rosalina feel much stronger. The movie shows that Peach wasn’t originally from the Mushroom Kingdom; she was a baby who traveled through a warp pipe from another world and was then raised by the Toads. This explains her as a child who found a new home and purpose in a foreign land, creating a meaningful connection to Rosalina’s already known story.
The fact that both Peach and Rosalina are portrayed as children lost from another world feels intentional, not accidental. The filmmakers could have easily kept Peach as the original ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, but they chose to give her a human background. This now seems like a planned decision to connect her story to Rosalina’s, potentially setting up a sequel where they are revealed to be long-lost sisters and explaining how they both ended up stranded as children.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 3, 2026.
Will the new movie reveal that Rosalina and Peach are sisters, or will this connection stay just a fan guess? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
