Okay, so the Super Mario Bros. Movie is seriously crushing it! Just a few weeks ago we were celebrating it making $756 million worldwide, but now it’s almost at a billion! Box Office Mojo just dropped the numbers – it’s made over $418 million here in the US, and over $545 million internationally. That adds up to a whopping $964 million globally! I can’t believe how well this movie is doing!
Box Office Mojo’s numbers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are estimates, and neither Universal Pictures nor Nintendo has officially confirmed the film’s worldwide earnings. However, reports indicate the movie cost $110 million to make, and with its current box office revenue, it has already earned over eight times that amount.
It’s still uncertain if The Super Mario Bros. Movie will reach $1 billion in box office earnings. Currently, Box Office Mojo ranks it 66th all-time. Avatar (2009) remains the highest-grossing film with nearly $3 billion, followed by Avengers: Endgame at $2.79 billion, and Avatar: The Way of Water with $2.3 billion.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, recently explained Nintendo’s strategy of making movies based on its classic games. He said the goal is to keep those older franchises popular and relevant for longer.
According to Miyamoto, people ultimately remember the game franchises themselves, not individual games. While new versions eventually replace older ones, it’s disheartening to see creations become limited to platforms like Virtual Console, which partly inspired them to continue video game development.
Currently, Nintendo and Illumination don’t appear to have any major future plans beyond enjoying the creative process. In a recent interview, Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri explained that characters like Fox McCloud were included in The Super Mario Bros. Movie simply for fun, and not as a hint of a potential Super Smash Bros. film.
To start, I don’t believe all Nintendo characters will be included, unlike a game like Super Smash Bros. My standing rule is that Pikmin can be featured in any Nintendo game series.
We already had a great cast for the movie, but we decided to add some fun surprises with a few secret cameos. There’s one in particular who has a significant part to play. We’re considering adding more characters like this in future installments, too.
The idea of a ‘universe’ often makes me think of a group of people meticulously planning out years of interconnected movies and characters. But that’s not how we work at all,” he said.
