It wasn’t shocking that The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned more on its first day than the previous film, even though a major plot point was accidentally revealed beforehand. But the movie continued to do even better throughout the weekend.
The movie has currently earned $372.5 million, according to Deadline. While slightly behind the previous film in the series, it’s now the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever. It’s also the biggest movie released this year, landing among Universal’s top five opening weekends. This is impressive considering some criticism about the story and characters. It could potentially surpass the original film’s $500 million total, but we’ll need to see how it continues to perform to know for sure.
In case you missed it, this movie is a follow-up to the 2023 film, bringing back beloved characters to battle Bowser and Bowser Jr. – this time in space! It’s as wild as it sounds, even featuring Fox McCloud from Star Fox as a key player. The first movie was a hit, and this one could lead to a third installment, completing a trilogy. For now, though, we can simply enjoy the fun and excitement, and maybe revisit some classic Mario games for a trip down memory lane.
