Mona Fastvold, the writer and director of the new musical drama The Testament of Ann Lee, again collaborated with composer Daniel Blumberg, who previously created acclaimed soundtracks for her films The Brutalist and The World to Come. She brought him on board to compose the music for her latest project.
The remarkable film tells the story of Ann Lee (played by Amanda Seyfried), who was born in Manchester and became the founder of the Shaker movement. The Shakers were a Christian group known for their beliefs in celibacy, peace, community, and equality. Their worship involved singing and dancing, which they saw as a way to overcome sin and evil.
Shaker songs first appeared in the 1780s, but initially contained very little lyrical content. It wasn’t until the 1800s that the Shakers began adding words, composing hymns and anthems with full texts.
Blumberg found a lot of inspiration in traditional Shaker hymns – there are thousands of them – and collaborated with experimental vocalists like Phil Minton, Maggie Nicols, and Shelley Hirsch to complete the 33 songs. The soundtrack also includes singing from the film’s actors, including Seyfried, Lewis Pullman, and Thomasin McKenzie.
Actress Seyfried described how the movie’s music came together. She explained that the composer, Daniel Blumberg, wanted to include original pieces alongside existing Shaker hymns. Initially, people were hesitant because the hymns – while beautiful – were very basic and dated back to the 18th century.
As a film lover, what really struck me was how he built this entire world around the story. It wasn’t just about the scenes themselves, but how everything flowed together – it needed to feel connected and have a rhythm, but not be overly stylized or feel forced. He was aiming for something natural, something that just felt real.
