Horror films that acknowledge themselves as horror films – often called “meta” horror – are popular, and director Daniel Goldhaber is adding his own twist to the classic 1978 mockumentary Faces of Death. Similar to how Anaconda reimagined a previous cult horror hit, this new Faces of Death builds its story around the idea that the original film actually exists within its universe. Fans have been excited to see this new take, starring Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Aaron Holliday, Jermaine Fowler, and Charli XCX, and a new, explicit trailer has just been released.
Though the original film by John Alan Schwartz came out 48 years ago, its core idea feels incredibly relevant today. We’re all constantly bombarded with strange and often unsettling AI-generated content online, much like the film’s premise. The original was a notoriously violent horror movie, so extreme it was banned in dozens of countries – a fact that became a brilliant marketing slogan: “banned in 46 countries.” By establishing the original film as part of the story, the writers, Isa Mazzei and Goldhaber, have given themselves a lot of creative freedom. Back in 2023, when the reboot was announced, Mazzei and Goldhaber shared some interesting thoughts about their approach.
The video Faces of Death was an early example of something going viral, and it’s a useful starting point for understanding how violent content spreads and repeats online.
The original Faces of Death sparked a wave of similar films, including titles like Cannibal Holocaust, the Japanese Guinea Pig series, the August Underground trilogy, and even V/H/S. Because of this history, the upcoming reboot is likely to be full of references to other horror movies and generate a lot of discussion. With actors from popular shows like Euphoria and Stranger Things involved, the film is expected to be a major cultural moment. Fans can revisit the 1978 original on Prime Video and Apple TV before the new Faces of Death arrives on April 10, 2026.
