The Testaments showrunner Bruce Miller teases more surprise appearances from The Handmaid’s Tale cast in future seasons

When it was revealed that The Testaments would be a continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale, viewers quickly began to ask if beloved characters like June Osborne would appear in the new series.

As expected, Elisabeth Moss reprised her role as the central Handmaid, appearing in several flashbacks throughout the first season of The Testaments, showing connections between June and Daisy.

It wasn’t entirely surprising, considering Moss is an executive producer on the show and her character has a motherly relationship with one of the leads, which needed more development.

Many fans were surprised to see Amanda Brugel reprise her role as Rita, appearing in episode 7 through flashbacks experienced by Daisy.

We recently spoke with ‘The Testaments’ showrunner Bruce Miller and naturally asked him about the possibility of seeing characters like Rita and June—and other unexpected faces—return in later seasons.

Yes, definitely,” Miller responded immediately. “These individuals are still part of our world, and they continue to pursue the same goals of fairness and righteousness as they always have.

Miller added, “June, Rita, and Emily are still in touch with each other. If your friend’s daughter was still trapped in Gilead, you’d still be included in discussions, even if you weren’t actively working with Mayday.”

What I really appreciate about these characters is their continued dedication to their original ideals. Even after achieving their own freedom, they remain focused on helping others do the same.

Miller is also motivated to bring the Handmaid’s Tale cast back for personal reasons too.

I spent ten years working with a truly amazing group of people. They were incredibly kind and supportive colleagues, and I’d give anything for just three more days to spend time with them.

I truly enjoy having people join us on set. If anyone has availability, I’d find a way to include them on the show – I definitely would.

Miller added that the cast is incredibly talented, and with the use of flashbacks, they can continue to tell stories about characters even if they’re no longer currently on the show.

Many shows bring back old cast members simply for publicity, but this feels different. It naturally fits within the story of Gilead and what could happen next.

When Brugel returned, he immediately questioned Miller about his decision to include Rita in the story of The Testaments.

I really wanted to portray who Rita is today – to pique the interest of new viewers while also giving those who already know her a satisfying glimpse into what she’s been up to and how she’s changed since we last saw her.

I want her whole apartment to reflect her personality and story – and it genuinely does. It’s not just about her words or actions, but everything around her.

I wasn’t interested in developing the character further. I just wanted to show what she was up to when we weren’t watching – things like her new haircut, jewelry, and going to cooking school. These details helped establish that she was doing well and getting her life back on track.

Now that The Testaments has been renewed for a second season, expect to see more of the characters Rita and June. The renewal was announced shortly before the first season ended.

Who else might appear? Fans are hoping to see Alexis Bledel return as Emily, and Madeline Brewer’s Janine also seems like a likely possibility, but it remains to be seen what the show’s creators have planned.
