The Vampire Diaries’ Greatest Villain Debuted 15 Years Ago Today (And Entirely Changed the Franchise)

Few television shows from the 2010s are as popular as The Vampire Diaries. This teen drama, which started in 2009 on The CW and was based on L.J. Smith’s books, quickly became a network staple thanks to its captivating love triangle involving two vampire brothers and a teenage girl. By the time it ended in 2017, the show had become a significant part of pop culture, even launching a spin-off called The Originals. While the show’s romantic storylines were a big hit, it was a particular villain who truly captivated fans and changed the entire series – and today marks the 15th anniversary of his first appearance.

It’s hard to believe there was a time when Klaus Mikaelson wasn’t a central figure in The Vampire Diaries. When he first came to Mystic Falls, he was determined to break a curse, but he ended up adding so much more to the story. As one of the original vampires – meaning he was among the very first – he expanded the show’s mythology and brought plenty of his own conflicts with him. Though mentioned in Season 2’s “Rose” and briefly seen possessing Alaric Saltzman in “Know Thy Enemy,” Klaus fully appeared as Joseph Morgan in the episode “Klaus,” which first aired on April 21, 2011.

Klaus Was Supposed to Die in Season 3 But Ended Up Getting His Own Spinoff

It’s surprising to learn that Klaus wasn’t always meant to be a central figure in The Vampire Diaries. Initially, the plan was for him to appear for a few episodes in Season 2, serve as the main villain in Season 3, and then be written off the show. Joseph Morgan, the actor who played Klaus, confirmed this in 2021. However, strong fan enthusiasm for the character led to him staying on much longer than originally intended.

As Morgan has explained before, a couple of things led to his decision. First, the fans really loved the character. Second, he enjoyed playing the role a lot, but he felt the character didn’t have enough potential for development within the world of The Vampire Diaries.

The storyline focusing on Klaus’s family in Season 3 showed that the show couldn’t fully contain his character. This family’s story became so beloved that it led to a spin-off series, The Originals, which followed Klaus and his family as they returned to their historically dramatic home of New Orleans. Instead of being written off, Klaus remained a key villain throughout seasons three, four, and five of The Vampire Diaries, solidifying his importance to the overarching story before becoming a more nuanced hero in his own series.

Giving Klaus His Own Series Was the Best Movie TVD Ever Made

Many fans consider spinning Klaus off into his own show, The Originals, the highlight of The Vampire Diaries. While The Vampire Diaries continued to be good, The Originals offered a fresh perspective. It focused on a more mature Klaus and his family, with richer character development and more complex, darker storylines. The new series also explored the broader world established in The Vampire Diaries, delving into its history and power dynamics.

The show also delivered a compelling and well-executed journey of redemption for Klaus. Throughout The Originals, audiences learned more about his past and the reasons behind his actions, realizing he wasn’t simply a villain, but a complex and often misunderstood character who fought to improve himself, especially for his daughter Hope and the family he unexpectedly found. By the end of the five-season run in 2018, Klaus had become a fan favorite and is now remembered for one of television’s most impressive transformations from antagonist to something more.
