Ubisoft Cancels Highly-Anticipated Game According To New Leak

Ubisoft has been changing its plans for future games quite a bit lately, and a new leak indicates another project has been canceled. Earlier this year, Ubisoft officially stopped development on six games, including a remake of the popular Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. These decisions happened as the company reorganized and reduced its workforce, and also created a new division to manage its biggest game series.

The publisher has postponed several games recently, and rumors last week indicated the upcoming Far Cry game was facing development challenges. Now, a previously expected, more relaxed game is reportedly the latest to be canceled.

Ubisoft’s Animal Crossing Rival Is Reportedly Canceled

According to a report from Insider Gaming, Ubisoft has cancelled Alterra, a game that was being developed to appeal to fans of Animal Crossing. Insider Gaming first reported on the game’s development earlier this year, but since Ubisoft never publicly announced it, they likely won’t release an official statement about the cancellation.

I was really excited about Alterra – it looked like it had a cool, blocky art style similar to Minecraft, and you were supposed to gather resources and craft things. The characters reminded me a little of those Funko Pop figures, too! It seemed like it could have been a lot like Pokopia or Dragon Quest Builders, which I love. It’s a shame they cancelled it, and I haven’t heard any official reason why, but thankfully, it doesn’t sound like anyone lost their jobs over it.

This Is A Missed Opportunity

Honestly, it’s been pretty clear for a while that Ubisoft got a little too big for its own good, so them trying to streamline things doesn’t really come as a shock. But this cancellation of Alterra… that one kinda hit me out of nowhere, since we hadn’t heard much about how the game was even coming along.

The market for relaxing games is booming, but even with lots of farming and decorating options, it’s surprisingly difficult to find games that truly compete with Animal Crossing, particularly from major game developers. Alterra could have been very popular with players who don’t own a Nintendo console.

Now that it seems Alterra is no longer in development, fans of life simulation games still have Animula Nook and Petit Planet to look forward to – both are free-to-play games with similar gameplay. Recently, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream also launched on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, bringing back the fun, unpredictable interactions that made the original Tomodachi Life so popular after a long wait.

We’ll probably learn more about what happened with Alterra eventually, but I doubt Ubisoft will share many specifics. Mostly, I’m hoping the recent wave of studio cancellations and layoffs, including at Ubisoft, starts to ease up soon.
