Morgan isn’t often the first character people think of when discussing The Walking Dead universe, but he deserves to be. He appeared in both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, and each show revealed a different side of his personality. If you set aside any attempts to simply please fans and focus on his actual contributions to both The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, you’ll see why.

Despite facing immense challenges – including dangerous enemies like Martha and Virginia, and the questionable actions of the P.A.D.R.E. group – he remains committed to his values, consistently prioritizing the safety of others and sharing what little resources are available.

Throughout everything, the character constantly grapples with what it means to be good, while also struggling with past trauma and avoiding the typical hero role. This complexity is what makes him compelling, and even when fans disagreed with his choices, many consider him essential to understanding the show’s world. Rick and Michonne’s spin-off, The Ones Who Live, didn’t feature Morgan, which creates a clear opportunity for him to reunite with Rick in the future.

Morgan is uniquely positioned to connect Rick with other characters and play a key role in the new story. Having lived through the entire post-apocalyptic world, he’s experienced loss, violence, and personal growth, giving him a valuable perspective beyond just basic survival. Because he’s already bridged the gap between the original series and the new one, he’s perfect for building the relationships this story needs. Ultimately, Morgan could help ensure the new narrative feels purposeful and substantial, rather than just a reunion designed to please fans.

If this new project aims to convincingly tie together the entire Walking Dead universe and bring it to a satisfying conclusion, simply bringing back fan-favorite characters won’t be enough. Morgan is crucial because he embodies the core themes of the franchise – trauma, resilience, and the ability to change – that have developed throughout all the different series. He isn’t just a welcome addition; he’s essential to making the story feel complete and connected.
