You can watch Season 3 of The Diplomat on Netflix now, and this article won’t reveal any plot details.
Fans of The West Wing were thrilled to see Season 3 of The Diplomat arrive last week, and not just because it’s a compelling show. Bradley Whitford, a former co-star of Allison Janney, joined the cast as her husband, bringing their on-screen chemistry to Netflix. While their years working together made the pairing feel natural, Whitford was still surprised by something during their reunion.
Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford, known for their roles as colleagues on The West Wing, are now playing a married couple. They portray Grace and Todd Penn on The Diplomat, with Grace becoming president at the end of season two. Whitford recently told People that it felt surprisingly natural to shift their on-screen dynamic from professional colleagues to spouses.
What surprised me most was how easily we were able to build on our existing relationship and create something new. It felt natural and comfortable. We’d collaborated on projects before, but turning that shared history into a marriage was especially enjoyable.
Bradley Whitford went from playing coworkers on The West Wing to a married couple on The Diplomat, so it’s understandable he wondered if the connection he shared with his costar would still work in these new roles.
Allison Janney actually had the same question, and she was also happily surprised, sharing that:
Honestly, slipping into these new roles was surprisingly comfortable. After playing characters on The West Wing who definitely didn’t have that kind of intimacy, doing scenes with romantic connections was a fun change, and that first scene we shot actually became one of my favorites. Working with Brad was just easy – we’ve known each other for a while, and I think it would have been way harder to build that chemistry with someone I didn’t have that history with. It was genuinely a blast! I was mostly excited for the rest of the Diplomat cast to finally meet him and see what working with Brad is like – he’s just fantastic, so joyful, and honestly, a dream to work with.
It’s wonderful to hear Allison Janney speak so highly of Bradley Whitford – he’s always been a pleasure to watch. Any true fan of The West Wing probably still remembers yelling “Victory is mine!” and craving delicious muffins and bagels. Their on-screen chemistry is especially clear in Season 1’s “Celestial Navigation,” where their scenes together are genuinely fun.
Allison Janney’s role on The Diplomat is expanding in Season 2 – she’s now a recurring guest star, alongside Bradley Whitford. This has excited fans of The West Wing, prompting many to revisit the classic series (available on HBO Max) and inspiring others, like myself, to start watching The Diplomat – and it’s been a great discovery!
All three seasons of The Diplomat are available to stream on Netflix now.
