Fans were upset when Henry Cavill announced he was leaving his role as the lead in the fantasy series, The Witcher, starting with seasons four and five. Liam Hemsworth took over the part of monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, and season four has now been released. Critics’ and viewers’ scores on Rotten Tomatoes show whether the show still succeeds without Cavill.
The latest season of The Witcher is getting a very mixed response. Critics are sharply divided, and audiences seem to really dislike it. While familiar faces like Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan are back, Henry Cavill returns as Geralt for what might be his final run. Overall, the scores suggest this season just isn’t hitting the mark.
Critics are divided on Season 4 of The Witcher, giving it a 56% rating. This is a drop from previous seasons, which received scores of 68% for Season 1, 95% for Season 2, and 79% for Season 3. While Jamie Parker from CBR noted some issues with the season’s pace, they ultimately found it enjoyable for fantasy fans. Aramide Tinubu of Variety had a more positive view, describing Season 4 as a sharper, less confusing season packed with action and compelling characters, both familiar and new.
In a review for The Guardian, Sarah Dempster criticized Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt, finding it lacked the charm of his predecessor and describing him as stiff and unconvincing. Clint Worthington of RogerEbert.com believes the show has run its course and is ready to conclude after its upcoming fifth season, suggesting it’s time to say goodbye to the Witcher.
Audiences Have Been Savage in Their Reactions to ‘The Witcher’ Season 4

Netflix
Despite some positive reviews from critics, the latest season of The Witcher has been heavily criticized by viewers. It currently has a very low score of just 18% on the Popcornmeter. One viewer expressed extreme disappointment, giving it only half a star and stating it was “the worst thing I have ever seen,” citing poor casting choices and significant departures from the source material – the books and games. They advised others not to bother watching it.
Most viewers aren’t impressed with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role from Henry Cavill. One fan explained they constantly compare Hemsworth’s performance to how Cavill would have handled the scenes, believing Cavill would have done a better job. Another viewer blamed the poor writing for making it impossible for Hemsworth to succeed, and lamented the decline of what was once a great show.
It’s probably a good decision to end the show after five seasons, since it looks like viewers have lost interest in the story.
