However, many fans don’t know that early in the series’ history, there was an attempt to make Zelda the main character. Despite being an interesting experiment, this game remains relatively unknown, even among dedicated Zelda fans.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of a famously troubled game in the Zelda series. Released on May 10, 1996, Zelda’s Adventure wasn’t made by Nintendo itself, but by Philips as part of a business deal. While the game was widely criticized for its poor gameplay, graphics, controls, and technical problems, it’s still interesting because of how different it is. Even now, it feels like a strange, alternate take on the Zelda universe.
The Strange Partnership That Created the CD-i Zelda Games

To understand the origins of Zelda’s Adventure, you need to know about a surprising turn of events in Nintendo’s past. In the early 1990s, Nintendo initially teamed up with Sony to create a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo. However, that partnership fell apart, ultimately leading Sony to develop the first PlayStation. After the deal with Sony failed, Nintendo then decided to collaborate with Philips on CD technology.
During talks with Nintendo, Philips gained permission to feature some Nintendo characters in games for its CD-i system. This resulted in a few unique Zelda games, like Link: The Faces of Evil, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon, and Zelda’s Adventure. These games were developed mostly without Nintendo’s direct involvement, and fans felt they were quite different from typical Legend of Zelda titles.
CD-i games were known for their clunky animations, unusual voice acting, and gameplay that didn’t feel as refined as Nintendo’s popular games at the time. The CD-i console itself had trouble finding its place in the market. Philips tried to sell it as a general entertainment system, not just a game console, which put it at a disadvantage compared to the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. By 1996, when Zelda’s Adventure came out, the gaming world was moving towards newer, 3D consoles like the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation, making the CD-i seem quickly outdated.
Why Zelda’s Adventure Became So Infamous

Okay, let’s be real about Zelda’s Adventure. It’s got a bad rep, and for good reason. When it first came out, people really didn’t like it, and honestly, it’s still considered one of the weakest Zelda games. I’ve heard a lot of complaints – it’s super slow-paced, really hard to get around, the fighting feels awkward, and it was just buggy. Plus, it looked so different from other Zelda games that a lot of fans were turned off right away.
Unlike most games of its time which used pixel art or animation, Zelda’s Adventure used real-life video and photographs. This made the game look strange and unnatural, rather than pulling players into the world. Characters appeared as compressed video clips, resembling a cheap TV show more than a Nintendo game. However, despite its unusual look, Zelda’s Adventure remains strangely captivating, particularly for those who weren’t able to play it when it was first released only in Europe.
Honestly, this Zelda game just feels different than anything else I’ve played in the series. Even now, screenshots and videos pop up online and people are still shocked by how strange it is, especially considering how polished most Zelda games are. I remember stumbling across footage of it years ago and honestly thought it was a fan-made project, not an official release! The live-action cutscenes were the biggest shock – they just didn’t fit the Zelda vibe I knew at all. It was so disconnected from everything else.
The Game’s Legacy Is Stranger Than the Game Itself

It’s interesting to note that Zelda’s Adventure pioneered an idea that would become popular much later: playing as Princess Zelda herself. This was unusual for a Zelda game at the time, and now, with the new game The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Zelda is once again the main character. It’s almost humorous to realize that a game once considered flawed actually experimented with this concept almost thirty years ago.
The original live-action Zelda presentation was unlike anything else in the series, and nothing similar has been tried since—until now, with the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. After the CD-i games, Nintendo became much more protective of the Zelda franchise, essentially treating those games as a separate, unofficial part of the series. Nintendo rarely mentions the CD-i titles, particularly when compared to the Zelda games they developed themselves.
As a Zelda fan, I find Zelda’s Adventure really interesting because it shows just how willing the gaming world was to try new things back in the 90s. They were figuring things out – new tech, ways to tell stories, all sorts of stuff – and games were changing fast. Not everything landed perfectly, but even the games that didn’t quite work are part of what makes gaming history so cool. Now, you mostly hear about Zelda’s Adventure online – people making videos about it, or collectors who love finding rare games. Honestly, even after thirty years, it’s still one of the weirdest official Zelda games out there!
