There’s A Lot Of Talk About Epic Universe Bringing Tourism To New Heights In Florida, But No One Seems To Be Talking About Disney World’s Own Record

After the unveiling of Epic Universe, it quickly became evident that its launch would revolutionize the theme park sector. However, uncertainty remained regarding the specific ways in which the dynamics would shift. Questions such as whether this heightened competition could pose a threat to Walt Disney World, if Disney was adequately prepared for competition, and the sheer scale of Epic Universe lingered. Now, we’re starting to receive some answers, and it seems that these developments are largely positive, particularly in terms of tourism.

Epic Universe Helped Bring In Record Tourism Taxes To Central Florida

In the thrilling month of May 2025, I found myself right in the heart of Orange County, Florida – home to two of my favorite destinations, Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this was a record-breaking period for tourism taxes! As it turned out, this was the exact month when Epic Universe made its grand debut. Fast forward to June, and guess what? The Orlando Sentinel has just revealed that the tourism tax revenue for that month reached an astounding $33.7 million – a June record, no less! I can hardly wait to see what the rest of this magical year holds in store.

In the comparison between 2024 and 2025 during the May-June timeframe, the standout factor is undeniably the debut of Epic Universe. Consequently, this novel attraction appears to be driving the surge in attendance numbers. Additionally, Universal’s corporate parent, Comcast, recently announced a nearly 20% rise in theme park revenue compared to the previous quarter, suggesting that Epic Universe is launching with impressive success.

Disney Experiences Had A Record Quarter Despite Epic Universe Competition

It’s often thought that triumph at Universal Orlando Resort might mean losses for Disney Parks, but this couldn’t be more incorrect. Instead, there’s been much attention on the success of Epic Universe, but a notable update surfaced during Disney’s latest quarterly earnings discussion. At that moment, Disney announced that their Disney Experiences division – responsible for theme parks and Disney Cruise Line – had an exceptional quarter. In fact, this division reported revenue soaring by 10% to reach $6.4 billion.

It’s possible the income originated from various sources, but notably, the domestic theme parks – Disneyland and Walt Disney World – were the main contributors to this growth. Both visitor numbers and individual spending at these parks saw an upward trend.

Discussions have been circulating about the possibility of financial struggles for Walt Disney World, due to the EU’s opening. This theory is based on the assumption that some tourists might opt for Universal Studios instead, to enjoy their new attraction Epic. However, it’s worth noting that history suggests this isn’t typically how things play out. More often than not, the introduction of new attractions tends to attract visitors to both theme parks.

It’s possible that the arrival of Epic attracted more tourists to Florida. The high number of tourist taxes collected suggests this is true. However, upon reaching Orlando, a significant number of these tourists seem to have opted to visit both Disney and Universal.

It’s undeniable that Epic Universe has been a massive success, drawing crowds as indicated by Monsters Unchained’s recent achievement. In summary, let’s recognize that Universal stands to gain significantly from this, but they aren’t the sole company reaping benefits.
