For over sixty years, Spider-Man has had an incredible journey in Marvel Comics. He began as a typical high school underdog, someone who was bullied even after gaining superpowers. Over time, he’s become a successful businessman, married a supermodel, and repeatedly saved the world. He’s earned the respect of other heroes, joining teams like the Future Foundation and the Avengers, and even sharing romantic relationships with figures like Captain Marvel and Mockingbird. Throughout his adventures, he’s also connected with other spider-powered heroes, often guiding and fighting alongside them.
Spider-Man is a fantastic hero, but there’s still one area where he could grow. He’s never truly been a team leader, and taking on that role would help him reach his full potential.
Spider-Man Needs To Lead His Own Team
Spider-Man often prefers working solo, but he’s been part of several teams over the years. He’s teamed up with groups like the New Fantastic Four when the original Fantastic Four were away, Reed Richards’ Future Foundation, and even the Avengers on multiple occasions. He’s also briefly been an X-Man, teaching at the Jean Grey School, and collaborated with the Spider Society – a team of heroes linked by a shared connection to the spider totem.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’ve always thought it’s a little strange that, despite being the go-to guy for pretty much any Spider-Society team-up, Peter Parker has never actually been the one calling the shots. Seriously, it’s about time Marvel gave him his own team to lead! He had a near miss with Tony Stark’s group of young geniuses, including Moon Girl, but that was more of a mentorship, and honestly, those kids ended up helping him more than the other way around. And while his current series has him hanging out with a bunch of aliens, he’s definitely not the leader of that crew either. Come on, Marvel, let Spidey lead!
Spider-Man is long overdue for a power boost and a leadership role. He’s consistently shown to be one of Marvel’s smartest characters, and his experience learning to be a hero independently as a teen makes him well-suited to guide a team of heroes. This leadership quality is currently missing from his portrayal, and Marvel should definitely explore it.
What Kind Of Team Would Be Best For Spider-Man?
So, what kind of team should Spider-Man head up? A team of Spider-People – like Miles Morales or Silk – would be the simplest choice, but it feels a bit too obvious. While he often takes charge when working with heroes like them, leading an official, dedicated team is different. An intriguing idea would be for Spider-Man to lead his own version of the Avengers. He’s usually a follower within the Avengers, but it would be interesting to see him take the lead and use his own strategies.
There are definitely some better approaches. One idea is to have Spider-Man mentor a team of young, up-and-coming heroes. Many teen hero comics focus on the struggles of young heroes trying to earn the respect of established ones. But what if Spider-Man was the established hero, leading a team of youngsters? He could teach them teamwork, share his experience in fighting villains, and help them grow into the next generation of heroes. While heroes like Miles Morales and Kamala Khan are already established, seeing Spider-Man in a leadership role with younger heroes could be a great dynamic.
Forget about Spider-Man mentoring new heroes. The most interesting team he could lead would be made up of former villains. A great example of this idea is the comic series The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, a funny story about a group of Spider-Man’s lesser-known enemies working together, including characters like Boomerang, Beetle, Shocker, Overdrive, and Speed Demon.
What if those classic villains teamed up and became heroes, with Spider-Man as their guide? He could mentor them, teaching them to do good instead of evil – a bit like Hawkeye leading the Thunderbolts. This situation would really test Spider-Man’s patience, but it could also prove he’s a capable leader – something Marvel hasn’t really explored for him yet.
