The Beginning After the End is being called one of the most debated anime this year not due to any explicit or ethically dubious content, but simply because it was so poorly received. Despite high anticipation for its release in 2025, based on the web novel by TurtleMe, this isekai power fantasy was quickly branded as the biggest flop of the year once viewers reached the first fight scene in Episode 2. With Season 1 now concluded and Season 2 already underway, TurtleMe has broken his silence to discuss the highly polarized response to the anime.
In a collaboration among multiple production companies, Fuji Television takes the lead role, while Studio A-Cat oversees the animation process. The narrative centers around King Grey, who is reborn in a fantastical realm as Arthur Leywin following his death in his previous life. Retaining his former consciousness, Arthur swiftly gains power and embarks on a mission to rectify past mistakes. Unfortunately, the captivating tale didn’t receive the production quality it merited. Recently, TurtleMe unveiled their degree of participation in the anime’s creation.
TurtleMe Addresses The Beginning After the End’s Failed Anime
In a recent interview with The Seattle Times, the writer shared thoughts on both the web novel and anime adaptation of “The Beginning After the End.” During this discussion, TurtleMe addressed the significant criticism that the anime has received, such as the petition to halt its production and request for a new version.
TurtleMe acknowledged that there were areas in Season 1 that could’ve benefited from more refinement, but due to his extensive work on the novel and comic adaptation, he had limited involvement with the anime. He admitted that he constantly reflects on ways to enhance his work, but for his peace of mind, it’s best to focus on what he can control – the storytelling in the novel and comic. He also expressed faith in his partners to create the best possible anime adaptations.
On previous occasions, TurtleMe has openly discussed the anime known as TBATE. Back in April, the author explicitly responded to a petition concerning the series, stating that it doesn’t require a redo. Instead, he encouraged supporters to stand by it during tough times and elevate it so that it can become a cherished piece of work for all.
Can TBATE Season 2 Fix the Show’s Biggest Problem?
When a show like “The Beginning After the End” is criticized as poor, it’s often due to various factors. However, in this case, one significant element that led to its decline was the fight scenes. As a power-fantasy action series, battles are integral to the storyline. Fans had high expectations for the animation quality, considering the popularity of the web novel and the impressive standards set by shows like “Solo Leveling”. Unfortunately, they were disappointed, as the fight scenes resembled more a PowerPoint presentation than an animated sequence.
The second installment of the popular series TBATE has been confirmed by Crunchyroll, and once again, Studio A-Cat will be in charge of the animation. This decision has sparked debates among fans, as some are hopeful that the quality of the animation for Season 2 will meet expectations, given TurtleMe’s comments.
