Recently, there’s been more discussion about the upcoming PlayStation 6 (PS6), with rumors spreading about potential hardware details that have supposedly leaked, and Sony hinting at the development of their next-generation gaming console.
The introduction of this has ignited passionate discussions among gamers, as some believe the timing is premature for fresh hardware.
In the usual course of events, consoles tend to be upgraded or replaced every six to seven years. The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is nearing its fifth year since release. Therefore, it seems like an opportune moment for potential changes or updates.
Despite the initial chaos brought about by the pandemic during the start of this generation, along with the prolonged development periods for triple-A games, some believe that the current-generation consoles haven’t quite reached their full potential yet.
Last week at Gamescom, Naoki Yoshida, leader of Final Fantasy 14, made news by suggesting that there isn’t much need for a PS6 at the moment, given the current high prices of gaming consoles. Notably, the price of PS5 increased by $50 in the US only a few days prior to this statement.
He said in an interview with Feed4Gamers:
From a gaming standpoint, it seems unnecessary to introduce new hardware at this moment, as gamers appear content with the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and the Switch 2. To be honest, these gaming devices are quite pricey from a gamer’s viewpoint.
Yoshida discussed the possibility of bringing Final Fantasy 14 to potential future hardware. He expressed his readiness to do so, aiming to make the game accessible to a wide audience, yet he feels that it’s premature for next-generation devices at this time.
Sony has hinted at the PS6 being in active development as their primary focus behind the scenes. They’ve strengthened their partnership with AMD for advanced machine learning technologies they are developing. Additionally, a significant hardware leak suggests that Sony is working on a new home console and handheld gaming device.
