Theresa Reaches Her Darkest Hour in New Minor Arcana #14 First Look (Exclusive)

Jeff Lemire’s comic series, Minor Arcana, published by BOOM! Studios since 2024, has quickly become a standout title. The story centers on Theresa, who reluctantly returns to her small town to care for her mother, a woman who pretends to be psychic. Back home, Theresa begins to suspect that real magic might exist, and that her hometown needs her help. The series is known for being emotionally resonant and thoughtful, telling a captivating and slightly spooky story. Now, Minor Arcana is wrapping up its third story arc with what promises to be its most touching issues yet.

ComicBook is offering a sneak peek at Minor Arcana #14, and it shows Theresa facing her biggest challenges yet. Throughout the series, she’s consistently tried to do good, but now things have fallen apart. She’s not only experiencing a potentially devastating low point, but she’s also starting to doubt everything she believes in.

Can Theresa Keep Herself Together?

The latest images clearly show Theresa is deeply affected by everything that’s happened, and now it feels very personal. A terrible event has befallen Missy’s husband, leading Theresa to question her own strength and wonder if she’s actually the one most in need of help. It’s a shocking and painful moment for readers, both because of Theresa’s suffering and the implications of this new development.

This issue is the second to last in a moving story arc. Theresa is struggling with her life in Limberlost and looks within herself for solutions. While trying to help others, she’s found herself caught in a chaotic situation. Now, she must try to cope with the pressure before it overwhelms her. Writer Jeff Lemire delivers a magical and emotional experience in this gripping issue.

Theresa’s Is Her Own Worst Enemy

What I really appreciate about Minor Arcana is how honest it is with Theresa’s imperfections. It’s so refreshing! It makes her feel like a real person, someone I can connect with, and honestly, it makes her story – coming back home and figuring things out – that much more compelling. As the author, Lemire, has pointed out, she definitely creates her own problems sometimes, but it’s clear her journey is about so much more than just that.

In 2024, writer Lemire explained to The Beat that Theresa has returned to her hometown due to difficult circumstances. It’s a mix of personal setbacks and her mother’s need for support. While she feels some bitterness about the situation, she’s even harder on herself. Her natural inclination to distrust people and her pessimistic outlook make things worse, often hindering her own progress. However, Lemire intentionally established Theresa as a character embarking on a journey of self-discovery and transformation, symbolized by the archetype of ‘The Fool’.

Minor Arcana #14 goes on sale on February 18th from BOOM! Studios.
