These 11-Year-Old Nintendo Figures Just Sold for $19K More Than a Vintage Super Mario, but Is the Price Real

Generally, old toys are popular with collectors, but a recent sale on eBay surprised everyone. While classic 1990s Super Mario action figures usually sell for around $400 (or a few thousand if still in their original packaging), a set of four figures from 2015—from a different Nintendo game—sold for an incredible $20,000 last month. This suggests that newer Nintendo collectibles are now commanding much higher prices.

Recently, a set of four Star Fox action figures sold for a surprisingly high price on eBay – a price that seems unusually high when compared to other collectible figures. While Super Mario Bros. figures from the 90s typically sell for between $300 and $400, and rare figures from the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie can reach $1000 for a Mario and Luigi pair, these Star Fox toys sold for a much larger sum. This raises the question of whether this price is legitimate, or if it’s just an unusual outlier, and if others with similar figures in storage might be surprised by their potential value.

Is Star Fox a Hidden Nintendo Action Figure Gold Mine?

It’s tough to compare prices for collectibles, as we recently saw with a Star Wars Boba Fett figure that didn’t sell for much. But the huge difference in prices for these four Star Fox figures is really surprising. Are collectors overlooking valuable items from the game series, or is something fishy going on? It’s likely the latter, and there are a few possible reasons why.

These Star Fox figures are relatively new, being made less than ten years ago, and were produced in large quantities. This contrasts with older Super Mario toys and other Nintendo collectibles from the early 1990s, which are rarer. Released between 2015 and 2017 by Jakks Pacific as part of their affordable “World of Nintendo” line, the set includes the main Star Fox team: Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad. Each figure comes with a small accessory, like a miniature Arwing or a bomb. While Jakks Pacific’s Fox McCloud is considered the first action figure of the Star Fox series, these figures weren’t limited edition and were widely available in stores.

Considering other recent sales of Star Fox collectibles – including a prototype Fox McCloud figure from the same line that went for just $350 – the $20,000 price seems like a mistake, and not something collectors should get excited about.

These Jakks Star Fox figures are actually fairly easy to find compared to other Nintendo collectibles, and a complete set usually costs around $200 or less. The recent $20,000 sale highlights that an item’s value is ultimately determined by what someone will pay for it, and serves as a reminder to be cautious about everything you see online.
