Today, popular sports games like Madden NFL and various college titles dominate the market. But these wouldn’t be possible without the pioneering games that came before them. Sports games have been around almost since the beginning of video games, going all the way back to the 1950s. These early titles were incredibly important in shaping the genre and helped transform the entire video game industry, ultimately making sports games some of the best-selling games worldwide. Here are five essential games that paved the way for modern sports titles, presented in the order they were released.
1) Pong (1972)

While not the very first video game – that title goes to 1958’s Tennis for Two – Pong is arguably the most influential. Released by Atari in 1972, Pong took the basic concept of Tennis for Two and made it accessible to a wider audience, as it was designed for consumers rather than requiring specialized equipment like an oscilloscope. This simple electronic ping pong game proved that video games could be commercially successful, paving the way for the arcade and home console industries we know today.
2) Electronic Quarterback (1978)

Handheld gaming has evolved dramatically since the release of Electronic Quarterback in 1978 – a game many now simply remember as “that old football game.” While its graphics and gameplay don’t compare to modern games, it’s a significant piece of video game history. The game offered a simplified football experience using lights, and it was innovative for its time by including a passing feature. It’s a game many people fondly recall playing, particularly those who grew up in the 70s and 80s. Despite being quite dated, Electronic Quarterback remains a beloved classic and one of the earliest examples of a functional, handheld sports game.
3) Pole Position (1983)

Released in arcades in 1982, Pole Position wasn’t the very first racing game, but it was hugely influential. While the graphics look very dated now, it was a major step forward from earlier games like the 1976 title F-1. It stood out with its use of synthesized voice and created intense competition, with players eager to beat each other’s high scores. Although arcade racing games aren’t as popular as they once were, they were essential for many arcades’ success for years—even into the 2000s—and Pole Position played a big part in that.
4) NHL ‘94 (1993)

Man, NHL ‘94 is a total classic. It was the first hockey game to officially have the NHL and the players’ association on board, which was a huge deal back then. It was the third game in EA’s hockey series, and honestly, it was a massive step up from what they’d done before. Critics loved it, and it actually got a lot of people like me, who’d never even seen a hockey game in person, totally hooked on the sport. It had all the real players and teams, and introduced a lot of the stuff we take for granted in hockey games today. Plus, the soundtrack was amazing! It’s pretty dated now, of course, but there’s no question NHL ‘94 is one of the greatest sports games ever made. It really holds a special place in video game history.
5) NBA Jam (1993)

Before 1993’s NBA Jam, most basketball video games were pretty basic. Many only allowed one-on-one play and lacked exciting features. NBA Jam revolutionized the genre with its fast-paced, over-the-top action, striking a great balance between realism and fun. While other basketball games struggled, NBA Jam completely changed expectations for sports games, and its influence can still be seen in today’s titles.
