This 65-Year-Old Sci-Fi Classic Still Hasn’t Been Adapted, Despite One Attempt A Decade Ago

Lots of well-known science fiction stories have been made into movies and TV shows, with some becoming classics of the genre. But one story, published in 1961, hasn’t been adapted for the screen yet. Robert Heinlein’s novel, Stranger in a Strange Land, gets its name from a quote in the Bible’s Book of Exodus.

The novel follows Valentine Michael Smith, a man born on Mars who is the only person to survive a space mission. He’s raised by Martians and then brought to Earth as a young adult. As Valentine learns about human life, he becomes famous, discovering he has unique abilities along the way. Eventually, he founds his own church, combining Martian traditions with the beliefs of an existing, pleasure-seeking religious group.

Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land received the 1962 Hugo Award and was recognized by the Library of Congress as one of the books that significantly influenced American culture. The novel also popularized words like “grok” and “fair witness,” and even predicted the invention of the waterbed – a decade before it became a reality.

Despite being a highly regarded novel, Stranger in a Strange Land hasn’t been adapted into a movie or TV series – unlike Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, which has inspired a whole movie franchise. However, several attempts have been made, and a TV adaptation almost happened in the early 2010s.

Syfy Attempted To Adapt Stranger In A Strange Land In 2016

In November 2016, Syfy announced plans to create a TV series based on Robert A. Heinlein’s novel, Stranger in a Strange Land. This was one of several projects the network was developing at the time, alongside shows like Krypton, Happy!, a new version of the 2013 sci-fi film The Machine, and an adaptation of Brave New World.

That initial burst of publicity was the only time anyone really talked about this version of Heinlein’s novel. The show never announced any actors or crew, and there haven’t been any updates since. The planned series, The Machine, was also never made. Other sci-fi adaptations like Krypton and Happy! were short-lived, lasting only two seasons each, and Brave New World, based on Aldous Huxley’s novel, ended up moving to the Peacock streaming service.

Why Stranger In A Strange Land Is Difficult To Adapt (But Still Should Be)

It’s interesting that Syfy is moving ahead with an adaptation of Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land, as it’s likely a more challenging project than Starship Troopers. The novel was groundbreaking for its time in the early 1960s, exploring themes of religion and sexuality, and remains a fascinating look at science fiction from that period. However, these complex ideas might not easily translate to a successful science fiction movie or TV series.

Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land reflects the attitudes of its era, particularly when it comes to how women are portrayed. Characters like the nurse Jill Boardman and the secretaries Anne, Miriam, and Dorcas, who all worked for Jubal Harshaw, aren’t shown in a very positive way and would likely be seen as problematic by readers today.

Despite its challenges, Stranger in a Strange Land could still be successfully adapted for other mediums. While respecting the original story’s core themes is important, a completely literal translation isn’t necessary.

A film or TV adaptation of Stranger in a Strange Land might have worked better if it had been made later in the 1960s. However, the story needs significant updates to appeal to modern audiences. With a talented and experienced science fiction storyteller at the helm, a successful adaptation is still possible.

Now that streaming services are popular, a TV adaptation of Stranger in a Strange Land could really thrive. Unlike traditional cable, streaming platforms offer more creative freedom, which would be a big advantage for a show like this.
