NBC never fully found another show as popular as Frasier, but one sitcom from the 1990s came close. Cheers was a hugely influential show in television history. Running for 11 seasons, from 1982 to 1993, it was set in a Boston sports bar and focused on the lives of its employees. While workplace comedies like MASH and Barney Miller existed before Cheers, the show’s success essentially created a whole new type of sitcom.

Many popular comedies, including Just Shoot Me, Scrubs, The Office, Workaholics, Parks and Recreation, Superstore, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Abbott Elementary, St Denis Medical, and DMV, likely wouldn’t exist without the influence of Cheers. Interestingly, Frasier, a very successful spinoff of Cheers, didn’t inspire nearly as many copycats, despite being almost as popular. The sitcom Newsradio was one of the few shows that managed to capture a similar feel to Frasier, though it focused more on a group of characters rather than a single main lead.

NewsRadio Came Close To Replicating Frasier’s Appeal

While Frasier often dealt with personal issues, the show mainly revolved around his job as a radio psychiatrist. His coworkers, Roz and Bulldog, were key characters, and many episodes took place at the radio station. Similarly, Newsradio centered on station WNYX and its kind-hearted news director, Dave Nelson, played by Dave Foley, known from The Kids in the Hall. The show also featured a talented cast including Stephen Root, Maura Tierney, and the beloved Phil Hartman.

Despite being very different from the character Frasier Crane, the sitcom Newsradio actually shared a lot of similarities with Frasier, more so than many other shows from that time. Both shows centered around a workplace – a radio station in Newsradio‘s case – and featured comedic conflicts between coworkers. The fast-paced environment of live radio also provided similar opportunities for humor. While many sitcoms tried to emulate the styles of Friends and Seinfeld, Newsradio was unique in that it clearly drew inspiration from Frasier.

Why Seinfeld And Cheers Produced More Imitators Than Frasier

Many popular TV shows, from lesser-known comedies like Two Guys and a Girl to hits like How I Met Your Mother, were influenced by the success of Friends and Seinfeld. Shows like The Big Bang Theory, New Girl, and the fan-favorite Happy Endings all took inspiration from these two series when creating their own stories, and it’s easy to see why. Friends and Seinfeld featured large groups of young characters and a simple format that other shows could easily adapt.

While shows like Newsradio and Just Shoot Me took inspiration from Frasier, they weren’t truly alike. Frasier had a unique feel, structure, and type of humor. The show worked because its main character, while flawed, was still likable – a slight change in personality could have made it unbearable. Unlike Friends and Seinfeld, which featured larger, more diverse groups of friends, Frasier focused on a smaller, more tightly knit cast. So, it’s not surprising many shows tried to replicate the success of Cheers, but Newsradio was the only one that really attempted to capture the spirit of Frasier.
