We’ve seen popular fantasy worlds like Middle-earth and Westeros brought to life on screen, and Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere is next in line. This means most of the biggest fantasy universes will have been adapted for TV or film. However, one well-known fantasy world remains untouched by movies or television, which is surprising. Adapting it would excite a dedicated fanbase and could potentially deliver the successor to Game of Thrones that many have been waiting for – something that’s been difficult to achieve given the number of shows that have tried and failed.
Great fantasy worlds become popular for a reason, and those that truly stand out deserve to be adapted for the screen. We’ve seen successful adaptations of franchises like The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and The Chronicles of Narnia, and even other beloved series like Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, and Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time have made it to the screen, though not always perfectly. That’s why it’s frustrating that Steven Erikson’s Malazan Empire hasn’t yet received the same treatment.
Despite Being One of the Best Fantasy Worlds, the Malazan Empire Has Never Appeared On-Screen
The Malazan Empire, created by Steven Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont, is widely considered one of the most impressive fantasy worlds ever built, largely thanks to Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen series. The empire’s detailed and expansive nature is a major reason for its acclaim – in fact, it’s more fully developed than the world in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. This incredible world-building also makes the series’ complex political themes feel realistic, as the authors don’t shy away from intricate details.
It’s likely the Malazan Empire hasn’t been adapted for film or television yet because it’s such a massive and complex story – a mistake could ruin it. While there have been rumors of potential adaptations, nothing official has ever materialized. Hollywood should seriously consider bringing Malazan Book of the Fallen to the screen, as it has the potential to become the next major fantasy franchise. Considering its scale and depth, it could even surpass Game of Thrones and truly deliver on the promise that show initially held.
A Malazan Adaptation Would Be the Most Promising Game of Thrones Successor
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones, many studios searched for a show to fill the void, and it’s surprising they overlooked Malazan Book of the Fallen. While The Wheel of Time and adaptations of Tolkien’s work haven’t matched the political complexity or gritty realism of the HBO series, Malazan could have. It’s even more intense and violent than George R.R. Martin’s books, with a similarly sprawling cast, intricate plotlines, and detailed world. Hollywood really shouldn’t ignore this series. Hopefully, with the upcoming releases of Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, another wave of fantasy adaptations will emerge, and Malazan will finally get its chance.
