As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for Stephen King‘s works, I must confess that many of us have had the pleasure (or chills) of watching some of his most iconic adaptations, such as “The Shining,” “It,” “The Mist,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and “The Green Mile.” King’s influence on genre films is undeniable, shaping some of the finest cinematic works ever created.
However, it’s also true that there are hidden gems in King’s adaptations that often go unnoticed or overlooked by fans like us. One such movie, directed by horror legend George A. Romero, was released in 1993 and has been unfairly overshadowed ever since. This film, despite being a masterpiece in its own right, remains criminally underrated and under-watched by many King fans, including myself.
In my humble opinion, the film I’m reviewing is none other than “The Dark Half,” Stephen King’s chilling adaptation of his 1989 novel by the same name, directed by George A. Romero. This isn’t just one of King’s darkest tales, but it’s also one that feels strikingly personal.
The narrative follows an author who has hidden behind a pseudonym for much of his career. In a bid to move forward with his own identity on his books, he symbolically buries this pen name. However, this fictional entity refuses to stay dead, resurrecting from the grave and embarking on a murderous rampage.
Absolutely, this work draws heavily from Stephen King’s personal experiences. For almost two decades, he published books using the pseudonym Richard Bachman, but eventually, his secret identity as the author was revealed. This revelation served as the foundation for the novel, “The Dark Half.
Released way back in 1993, “The Dark Half” struggled to make an impact at the box office, earning just $10 million and falling short of covering its production costs. However, it has gradually garnered more supporters over time, and this trend is expected to continue with its latest move into the realm of streaming. George A. Romero’s adaptation of “The Dark Half” can now be watched for free on Tubi, providing Stephen King enthusiasts everywhere an opportunity to view it without any financial investment.
In “The Dark Half,” I take on a twofold role: Thad Beaumont and the malevolent creation born from my literary works, George Stark. Joining me in this chilling tale are Amy Madigan, Michael Rooker, and Royal Dano.
On Tubi, Stephen King enthusiasts might also be interested in watching the film “Maximum Overdrive“, as it was the author’s sole directorial endeavor.
