This Scrapped Dexter: Resurrection Storyline Would’ve Totally Changed the Show

The show Dexter: Resurrection almost gave the main character, Dexter, a fresh start that would have drastically altered the series. After Dexter: New Blood concluded in 2022, it seemed like Michael C. Hall had played the infamous serial killer for the last time. Dexter was seemingly killed off in the revival, which aimed to provide a better ending than the original series finale that disappointed many viewers. Surprisingly, New Blood proved to be divisive, and fans passionately campaigned for Dexter to be brought back. Despite the long odds, Dexter was ultimately resurrected.

The team that created the show managed to bring Dexter back for the popular new season, Dexter: Resurrection, but it wasn’t easy. Bringing him back from the dead presented several problems – how do you explain the gunshot wound, or the fact that everyone believed he was a serial killer? And what about the police officer who disappeared from his jail cell? Dexter: Resurrection found ways to address these issues, allowing the writers to move forward with a new story following the events of New Blood. However, the writing process for Resurrection involved some significant revisions.

Dexter: Resurrection Almost Gave Dexter a Totally Different Home and Job

In a recent interview with Final Draft, the creators of the new series, Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds, discussed their writing process. They revealed a surprising detail: a note from Showtime significantly altered – and they believe improved – the show. Originally, Dexter was envisioned living in a luxurious glass apartment overlooking New York City, working as the building’s manager. However, Showtime’s Gary Levine suggested a different living situation: Dexter should live with Blessing, a character already planned for a different role in the series.

Initially, we envisioned Dexter living in a modern apartment with glass walls, offering a view of the city, and Blessing as a separate part of the narrative – they weren’t a couple. But Gary suggested uniting their stories. He felt the contrast between Dexter’s shadowy existence in the basement and the life happening above him – which he could always hear – was compelling. This idea dramatically improved the show, so we changed direction. We’d already developed plans for this luxurious, glass-walled building, but Gary’s suggestion proved to be a turning point.

Reynolds explained that this alteration dramatically improved the show, emphasizing the importance of writers being receptive to changes. Had they stuck with the initial idea, the entire series would have unfolded differently. The relationship between Blessing and Dexter is central to Dexter’s growth in Dexter: Resurrection, but it also meant Dexter wouldn’t have been working as a rideshare driver. Because the first season revolves heavily around Blessing, it’s intriguing to consider how much different the show could have been with the original storyline.

Okay, good news for all of us Dexter fans! Season 2 of Dexter: New Blood (or Resurrection, whatever you want to call it!) is officially happening, and they’ve already started writing! Now, if you were hoping to catch it this summer like Season 1, you might be disappointed. Clyde Phillips has said they’ll still be filming throughout the summer, so it’s looking more like a fall release next year. Still, that’s not so bad, right? More Dexter is always a win!
