Swifties, look what you made Dictionary.com do.
Taylor Swift’s influence continues to expand, and her dedicated fans, known as Swifties, have now made their mark on the English language. The word ‘Swiftie’ has officially been added to the dictionary, recognizing the cultural impact of her fanbase.
According to Dictionary.com, a “Swiftie” is an American English term for a fan of Taylor Swift. Interestingly, the word also has a different meaning in British English, where it’s slang for a trick or deception.
Even though some English purists might object, Dictionary.com has very specific rules for adding new words to its listings.
The company employs a team of lexicographers—professional dictionary editors—who evaluate whether a word should be included based on four criteria: widespread use, consistent meaning among users, long-term relevance, and broad usefulness.
The term “Swiftie” was included in the dictionary simply because people were already using it – it wasn’t added to the language by the dictionary itself.
For those still upset about the inclusion, it’s worth remembering that Taylor Swift’s fanbase nickname – which she officially trademarked in 2017 – isn’t the first fandom name to be added to Dictionary.com.

Since the film The Life of a Showgirl came out in October 2025, two of its songs, “Opalite” and “The Fate of Ophelia,” have both reached number one on the Hot 100 chart. “Opalite” hit the top spot after its music video was released in February.
As a longtime Taylor fan, what always strikes me is how genuinely thrilled she still seems with every achievement, no matter how big! Even after breaking countless records, she still seems as excited and grateful as ever – it’s amazing to witness!
Taylor expressed her incredible excitement and gratitude for the support her new song and video received. She shared on Instagram that this is the first time she’s had two songs from the same album reach number one on the Hot 100 chart since her 2014 album, 1989 – almost twelve years ago!
Like Beyoncé fans known as the “Beyhive,” “Trekkies” who adore Star Trek, and “Janeites” who cherish the novels of Jane Austen, Taylor Swift now has a dedicated nickname for her fans: “Swifties.”
Getting a word added to the dictionary is just one of many achievements for Taylor Swift over the past two decades, starting with the release of her first album, appropriately titled Debut in 2006.
During her career, she achieved many historic milestones, including becoming the youngest person to win Album of the Year at the Grammys in 2010 at age 20, and later becoming the first—and still only—artist to win the award four times.
Taylor Swift’s album, The Tortured Poets Department, broke records by reaching 1 billion streams in just one week. Her Eras Tour is already the most financially successful tour ever, and she uniquely holds all ten top spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart from a single week – something she first accomplished in 2022 with Midnights and again in 2024 with TTPD.

Even after achieving countless records, Taylor still feels the same excitement and gratitude with each new accomplishment.
Okay, I’m seriously losing it right now! Taylor posted on Instagram about “Opalite” and I just…can’t even. She said it’s the FIRST time she’s had two songs from the SAME album hit number one on the Hot 100 since 1989! 1989 came out almost twelve years ago! Twelve years! I’m replaying the video and ‘Opalite’ a million times, it’s just incredible to see her achieve this again. I’m so proud and happy for her!
She went on to say she knew it was a lot of statistics, but she was incredibly grateful to the fans for embracing the song. She was really excited and wanted to express her sincere thanks for their support.

You know, people always ask me about hidden talents, and I’m usually pretty normal! But I do have something a little unusual – I’m double-jointed in my elbows. I actually mentioned it during a fun ’73 Questions’ video I did with Vogue back in 2016. It’s not exactly a skill, but it’s definitely something I can do that most people can’t!
7. Her drink of choice? Vodka and Diet Coke, as revealed in that same Vogue video.
She disabled comments on her social media accounts to avoid negativity. In an essay for Elle titled “30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30,” Taylor explained that while social media can be positive, it can also create feelings of inadequacy by constantly showing you what others are doing and how you might be falling short. To combat this, she turns off comments on her posts. This allows her to share updates with her fans without needing their approval or reassurance, and helps her avoid seeking validation from others.

Taylor Swift doesn’t have the X app (formerly Twitter) on her phone. In an interview with Billboard, she explained that she often feels overwhelmed when using the platform and quickly closes it. While she follows politics, she doesn’t care about celebrity gossip or fashion news, feeling her brain has a limited capacity for information.
