This Underrated British Sci-Fi Series Is the Dream Revival I’ve Wanted for 14 Years

Fans are hoping to see the British sci-fi series, a spin-off of Doctor Who, return after 14 years. Showrunner Russell T. Davies successfully brought Doctor Who back in 2005 after a 16-year break and greatly expanded its universe with spin-off shows. While these spin-offs allowed for new stories, many haven’t had the same impact. Along with shows like The Sarah Jane Adventures and Class, and the new series The War Between the Land and the Sea, viewers are eager for another classic spin-off to be brought back.

After Doctor Who returned in 2005, Torchwood was the first spin-off series. It was a more adult and realistic show, airing late at night on BBC Three. The series followed a team of specialists in Cardiff who dealt with strange occurrences and debris falling through a tear in time and space. Torchwood ran for four seasons between 2006 and 2011, including the special event seasons Children of Earth and Miracle Day, but hasn’t been on television for 14 years. Despite some debate, Torchwood deserves a new live-action series to bring it back to viewers.

Why Torchwood is the Best Doctor Who Spinoff & Deserves to Be Revived

First airing in October 2006, Torchwood followed Welsh police officer Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) as she discovered the world of the Torchwood team. They dealt with alien threats on Earth, tackling issues too complex and controversial for the more family-oriented Doctor Who. The show delved into mature themes like gender, sexuality, LGBTQ+ issues, the meaning of life and death, and the darker side of human nature. This made Torchwood more appealing to adult viewers, offering a grittier, more realistic, and emotionally resonant experience than its predecessor.

Bringing back Torchwood could be a great way to explore relevant issues in today’s world. However, it likely shouldn’t include John Barrowman reprising his role as Captain Jack Harkness. Barrowman played the immortal leader of the Cardiff-based Torchwood team and previously appeared with the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). Due to past accusations of misconduct – specifically, reports of on-set exposure dating back to 2008 – his return would be problematic. While Jack Harkness was a central figure, the show could absolutely continue with a different lead.

There are a few ways Torchwood could return. One idea is to feature Gwen Cooper leading a new team, navigating her work and personal life after the events of Miracle Day. Another possibility is bringing back Martha Jones, the former companion of the Tenth Doctor, and having her join Torchwood after leaving UNIT. Even the character of Rogue from Doctor Who – who some fans thought might replace Jack Harkness – could end up at Torchwood. Ultimately, fans have been hoping for a Torchwood revival for over a decade, and it feels long overdue.
