This week’s special issue debates the future of the BBC

This issue focuses heavily on the future of the BBC. Last November, we asked readers for their thoughts on this important part of British culture, and we received a fantastic response. Hundreds of you shared your opinions with us, and many also participated in the BBC’s official discussions about its direction.

We’ve been reading your letters and emails, and it’s clear that people feel strongly – whether positively, negatively, or somewhere in the middle – about the BBC’s programmes, services, principles, and its importance to the UK.

We’ve included perspectives from people working in broadcasting, writing, performance, and commentary to spark a discussion. They hold diverse viewpoints, and that’s a good thing. However, everyone contributing agrees on one thing: the BBC’s future is important.

That’s why my fellow viewers and I are sending our thoughts directly to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and also to the new Director-General of the BBC, Matt Brittin. We feel that as people who watch, listen to, and ultimately fund the BBC, our opinions really matter when it comes to shaping what happens next with the organization.

I’d like to thank Tom Loxley, TopMob’s brand director, for initially supporting this project and collaborating with our editors to make it happen.

Thank you so much for participating! Your input is incredibly valuable as our company moves forward during this crucial time – it’s given us direct insight into what matters to people like you.
