While Jon Bernthal is widely considered the definitive Frank Castle by many Marvel fans, he wasn’t the first actor to play the Punisher. Before his gritty portrayal in the Netflix series, Dolph Lundgren played the character in a little-known film from the late 1980s, and another actor took on the role in a 2004 movie and a 2012 short film. However, Jane recently told ComicBookMovie that she doesn’t think that actor was a good fit for the part.
Although Jane’s film has gained a bit of a cult following, the actor feels the current actor is perfect for the role and has no plans to play Frank Castle again. He explained:
Looking back, I realize I wasn’t the right fit for Frank Castle, the Punisher. He’s supposed to be Italian, with dark hair and a family history that really matters to the character. He emerged in the 70s as a direct reaction against the romanticized image of the Mafia – you know, after films like The Godfather had made them almost glamorous. Frank, or Francis Castiglione as he was originally, was meant to be the anti-mob figure. Honestly, I didn’t naturally fit that description at all. I ended up having to dye my hair and really transform myself to even begin to look the part.
Honestly, seeing someone else take on that role feels… right. I enjoyed my time with it, and I really gave it everything I had, but it just wasn’t a perfect fit for me. I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity, but I knew deep down I wasn’t the ideal person to bring that character to life.
‘The Punisher’ Recently Blasted Back on Free Streaming
Even though it received mixed reviews when it came out over two decades ago, The Punisher often finds a new audience and becomes popular whenever it’s available on free streaming services. Recently, it was the most-watched movie on Tubi for several days after being added back to their selection.
Jon Bernthal, who many fans agree is perfect for the role of Frank Castle, is back as the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Daredevil: Born Again. While he won’t be in the show’s second season, he’s scheduled to appear in this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day and will also have his own special presentation on Disney+ sometime next year.
Viewers are thrilled to have The Punisher back, and he hasn’t lost any of his signature intensity in moving from Netflix to Disney+. Now, people are excited to see what happens next with this complex and troubled character, and are wondering how he’ll fit into the more family-friendly Spider-Man universe next year.
Marvel’s Netflix Punisher series is available with the rest of the MCU library on Disney+, while Jane’s The Punisher is still available to stream on Tubi. Jane’s latest role is in the new western Frontier Crucible, which is released on December 5, 2025, and he will also be releasing a new werewolf graphic novel, “The Lycan.”
