Marvel Studios managed to keep the shocking ending of Thunderbolts under wraps until its release, even with a large team working on the project and numerous superhero enthusiasts speculating about it. Known for their secrecy and stringent non-disclosure agreements, Marvel’s protection of the Thunderbolts’ transformation into the New Avengers was not as meticulous as usual, according to director Jake Schreier. In an interview with egmr.ru this week to promote the movie’s digital release and upcoming 4K and Blu-ray release on July 29th, Schreier admitted that a significant part of maintaining Marvel secrets is often just crossing one’s fingers and hoping for the best, and in this case, it paid off.
The director mentioned that he initially came across this specific line in the early version of the movie script, well before he joined the team. He explained that while the project evolved differently, this particular line remained a constant element from the start. Essentially, it shifted from an ending to a single line instead. Consequently, preserving one page of the script is crucial. Interestingly, he suggested that some earlier scripts may not have warranted including this line. However, most of the distributed drafts featured ‘Thunderbolts’.
Apart from this, Schreier could think of no other feasible precaution he took to safeguard the secret, except for the arrangement of the schedule for the background actors on the day they shot that dramatic scene. On that day, he explained, “we sent all the background actors off the set. We only had Julia say ‘Thunderbolts,’ with the exception of close-up shots, and we kept all the background actors away from the set.
If not, one can only cross their fingers and pray that nothing leaks. People managed to keep this under control quite effectively. I’m certain some information slipped out here and there. We understand that these things will eventually be revealed, but we try to keep them hidden for as long as possible and construct a movie that functions well, even if hints about such matters may already exist in the world.
Fans had long anticipated that the Thunderbolts team might take on an Avengers-like role before the movie’s release, and for many, this wasn’t much of a shock. Interestingly, it was Marvel Studios that received the most criticism for revealing this secret too early, as their marketing strategy shifted following the film’s first weekend in cinemas. Billboards across major cities were updated to read “New Avengers” instead of Thunderbolts, clarifying the asterisk along the way.
Some enthusiasts might uncover this secret themselves this very month, as “Thunderbolts*” is now accessible digitally, with its 4K and Blu-ray release scheduled for the 29th of July.
